I also shop at LL Bean - most (all?) of my outwear is from them.

Cabelas has gone the way of many large department stores of late. 20-30 years ago they could maintain large inventories of quality products because where else were people going to shop? Now, you can get all your outdoor equipment from the individual companies on line and bypass the large stores. Cabelas had to go cheaper to continue the profits. The local store really has more non hunting type clothing than anything else in it. They still have a large selection of guns, scopes, ammo, etc., but I can pay slightly less at several locally owned gun stores.

Not really much reason for them to exist anymore. I can't think of one single piece of outdoor gear I can get at Cabelas that I can't get direct from the manufacturer at better quality. I still have and use plenty of good Cabelas stuff I bought years ago, I just doubt I'll be shopping there much in the future.

What happened here is Cabelas bought out all the independents except for a few small seasonal outfits. Kinda like a scorched earth, my way or the highway sorta deal. Nobody to go back to now.

Never thought I would see Cabela's go downhill, but it happened.I had their VISA card for almost 25 years, and when it changed to Crapital One MC I told them to keep it.Already have a MC through a credit union, don't need another one.And killing the bargain cave was very lame.

I watched the downfall of Gander Mountain for years.Started when they sold the catalog division to Cabela's,and started building stores everywhere. Some were managed good, some not.If anyone has ever been to the original Gander in Wilmot,WI that was the place to go to.Gander Outdoors is an overpriced joke, not much for hunting/fishing.And Dick's is mostly now athletic stuff and lot's of Under Armor.

Most of the fishing/hunting stuff I buy these days is from Fleet Farm or Scheel's.A decent place for online fishing is Reed's in MN.

Seems like Gander Mt focused more on outdoor sports like backpacking and camping, rather than hunting and fishing. This probably lead to their demise as it doesn't seem to be as popular as it was in the 90's and early 2000's. The camping sections at Cabela's and BPS are weak.

    Agree with you.
I remember back in the day, when the Cabela's and Gander Mountain catalogs came it was like when you were a kid and the Sears and JC Penney Christmas Catalogs came. I was in the Kansas City Cabela's when it opened and that was a shopping experience. A couple of months ago I was in the Richfield Wi store, very disappointed.
With Gander Outdoors, only in the Sheboygan Wi store once. Went after going to Midwest Shooters Supply in Lormira WI. looking to buy two pistols. The customer service sucked. Walked out and and told employee that we were waiting at the pistol case for 5 min and nobody helped us. Store was empty and there were 3 people working gun counter.
Went to Gander and got what I was looking for. Customer service was GREAT. Price was maybe a bit more but I don't mind paying for good service.

We are fortunate (or unfotunate now) to have a Cabelas within 10 minutes of us..... I can tell you its disappointing now to even walk in there.... They got rid of the Bargain Cave which blows, and the RedHead hostile takeover has started..... I won't step back in there, no reason to spend my money there any longer......
