Other people's builds might be #EAF, this build is #LAF...Lame AF

Meet Lola, the star of the show! Lola is a 2010 Barcelona Red DCSB SR5. 44,000 miles when I bought it:

    IMG_3260 (2).jpg

As it sits now (sort of...):
    E5E3F41C-698B-4FC8-BFCF-458825D600DE.jpg

The Goal of this build is to make something thats offroad capable, fun to go fast on the whoops with, but remains a solid and reliable daily driver. I climb and so spend a lot of time on the highway getting to the mountains from Denver then some time off road getting to the climb from the highway. This build will reflect that split. I was raised in the SoCal Desert scene and so love the Baja rigs and take a lot of inspiration from them as well.

I plan to use this space to keep track of what I've done, what I want to do, and to solicit ideas and feedback from the assembled crew!

    Exterior:
    Removed the dumb bug guard
    Falken Wildpeak 265/75/16
Derped the Stock Steelies with Brass Monkey from dip your car
WhiskeyTango ZipTie tow plug relocation to the crossmember
Fog Lights to Sylvania Silverstar Lamin-X Fog Lights Yellow
Relentless Tailgate Reinforcement (Still needs paint)
    Diff Breather Mod
BulletProof Fab Front Recovery Point (Ordered)

    Interior
    :

Rhino USA Recovery Receiver and shackle
    WeatherTech Floor Liners
Tech Deck with RAM mount for phone
Samsung Tab A 7" soon to be on a Hondo Big Squeeze
Bad Elf GPS Pro throwing coordinates to Gaia GPS on the tablet
Meso Customs Dual Maps and White Dome

    On Deck:
ARB Single Compressor with Slee Offroad Engine Bay Mount
    Baja Designs S2 Ditch Lights
    HomerTaco Satoshi Grill

    Eventuallyhopefullymaybe: (No particular order)

    King/Fox Mid-travel setup
More recovery gear (Shovel, jack, Maxtrax, etc)
Prinsu Roof Rack w/ Light Bar Cutout
    BlueRidge Overland Taco hammock
New Wheels! (SCS F5 Dark Bronze vs Method 701 Bronze)
Pass Ham Test and get a HAM radio!
    Bed Lights (Soon hopefully)
At The Helm Front Bumper with no hoops (or full prerunner) (when he finally builds one for the 2010)
    Rear Bumper--Mobtown with Swingouts
    More armor

I'll probably be ticking things off in terms of some cheap mods as well as saving up for the bigger, performance oriented things. I'll keep this page updated as I change things, take it out into the hills and have fun with it! I'm sure my list of wants will change as I start to actually use the truck more and get after it!

    First Trip!
Road tripped (I think people in the know call this "Overlanding") out to Zion to go canyoneering, mobbed around the desert having some fun going fast, then out to Indian Creek for some climbing! Here Lola is being used to dry all of the clothes we had that got wet in the canyon then froze overnight... IMG_3317.jpg

The boys over as RA Built, a local fabricator, welded on my sliders they built for me!

I’m so psyched with how they look and can’t wait to get them scratched up!

Turns out that a ski strap is a great way of keeping a snatch strap all nice and rolled up!

So I’m wanting to get a tablet with a Bad Elf puck to run Gaia GPS for maximim #EAF points.

What are people doing for mounting it in the cab? I’ve seen tons of options. Ideally it would be easy to store the tablet during my work week then pull it out for trips. Ram mounts? I’ve seen some cool ways of mounting the ram mount but I’m not sure who makes what.

This should be major EAF points.

Edit: just noticed it says 12-15, and yours is 2010. Not sure if it works or not.

Got truck back from the shop for an oil change, t-case, and diffs oil change as well. I would do it myself but don’t have a driveway and doing a bunch of work in the street is a little too sketchy for me. Luckily one of my best friends is buying a house with plenty of garage space that he’ll let me use for wrenching!

Got the Lamin-X for the fog lights in the mail #RallyAsF. I’m digging the look but will probably upgrade to the Baja Designs Squadrons when they come out with the DOT version!

Goddang, looking at those pictures, that chrome needs to go! Already on the HomerTaco list and he can't build them quick enough!

I'm taking my HAM License test in a few weeks, planning on getting a handheld with a mag mount for now, eventually we'll see about upgrading to a full mobile rig.

Looks like there's some shenanigans with the cheap handhelds and FCC licenses and stuff. Is the Baofeng radio that everyone used still good? Or did the new regulations neuter it?

Yes it’s still good enough. The reason fcc is going after them is because they operate outside of there legal frequency. Aka frs/gmrs radio frequencies. Personally I ran a beofang and a mag mount antenna for a year or so before I just upgraded to a mobile unit

Parts are slowly trickling in for operation fighter-jet cockpit. Standby to standby.

Also Relentless Fab Tailgate Reinforcement is going on tomorrow AM. Then will take it off to paint it eventually...

Thanks to @DaveInDenver and @Wulf , got this bad boy mounted today. Still have to get some new hardware for the shoulder since the stock doesn’t really work. Once I get around to that I’ll need a warm day to pull it back off, prime it, and paint it black.

Psyched for this. My tailgate feels like a tailgate now, don't have to worry about it. Also making coffee while camping is going to be way easier! The aeropress doesn’t really balance on the ridges well!

Editing to add: I don't like how the stop top set of screws sits (they have a "shoulder" that makes them look like they aren't screwed in all the way). Ordering the screws Relentless Fab recommends was going to be ~$22 with shipping, where as the Mobtown setup which replaces the nylon washers with rivnuts was ~$30 shipped. Worth it in my opinion! I'll be installing all that when I finally have a warm day to paint!

Is anyone running the Fumoto Valve without skids? Is it a bad idea or is it pretty burly/protected?

I was a long time drip/french french press coffee maker but Aeropress coffee definitely lives up to all the hype
