I know this is posted somewhere else, just wanted to give everyone a chance to read it.
I hope this makes sense of things, really makes me want to get an OVTune once 1.05 comes out.
Although, after the TSB I had done, I don’t hate the transmission anymore... it’s OK now. I just know the truck will drive a lot better with OVTune.

I still love it, and wouldn’t trade it for anything- it’s a fantastic vehicle and I’m quite thankful I was able to get my hands on one.

Hope this helps settle someone’s mind, don’t get rid of your taco! There’s hope! (And do the dang TSB if you haven’t already)

Everyone loves to say that but a brand new Tacoma sells for the same dollar value that a 1995 Tacoma sold for and almost exactly the 2018 average market price for new vehicles.

So we still have to pay to have a 43k truck drive like one. Now I know why it downshifts so hard at stops, it's going from 3rd to 1st and just bangs in. The whole truck shakes like you're rear ended. It's super abrupt even post tsb. And there's a delay going into any other gear, thinking thinking shift.

Man, you all have pricey Tacomas... $32,4xx out the door all fees etc. 2017 Sport DCSB MT and the truck drives perfectly. SOOOOOOOO happy I got the MT

Brief research tells me you are right. Dollar value is pretty close. I saw 65% inflation between 1995 and 2018. That makes a $22,000 top tier Tacoma in 1995 cost $36,000 in 2018. Damn that is crazy to think about.

My opinion is that the perceived value of the dollar has not gone up with its actual inflation rate and that is why goods seem more expensive. Also consider this, it was not uncommon for our parents and grandparents to be a one job family while the other parent stayed home. That is rare today, I believe it has to do with wages not following inflation.

Regardless, I think that @Riotfunk is right, a brand new truck shouldn't need a software update to drive right, but we see that all the time in software and hardware. Mistakes are made and updates need to be done. It is growing pains when a new model comes out. That is why people say to never buy the first year (or several years) of a remodel because there will be issues that will be straightened out after a few years.

Glad I got the mt too but I'd have no problem getting a auto with the 1.05 with the new manual mode.

I have a pretty much brand new 2018 ORDC, just bought in September. How do I know if this has been done or is it up to each buyer to have it done? I love my truck but don’t love the tranny by any means.

And a lot of incomes have not risen at the same rate, so the gap is wider, not parallel.

I just bought a 2018 Double Cab OR. I haven’t experienced any of the issues that I hear a lot of you talking about. The engine is a little rev happy and lacks torque down low, but nothing out of the ordinary. I traded a 17’ TRD Off-road Tundra in on this truck and I have also had an SR5 premium 11’ 4 Runner. Both the Tundra and 4 Runner had cluncky transmissions downshifting to a stop. My friend has a Tundra that also does the same thing with 325,000 miles on it. Has never been apart and the only failure has been a starter and an alternator. Not saying that the folks that are having issues aren’t. Just sharing my experience.

Pd 38 and some change, but sticker price 43k.
Also I get growing pains on new models, but this is going on 4 years. 16,17,18,19s and it’s still not right. So 3.5 years before they even offered an update for it. Which has been one of the biggest complaints since the truck debuted and even in the 2019 review. I’d love to drive an OVTUNED truck to see the difference, but can’t justify the cost just to make it livable. If this thing was boosted then yeah, it will shift better and have like 100 more hp/torque.

Mine is an OR and I paid $32,500. These people paying over $40,000 are insane!

First off I applaud the OVTune guys for addressing a known problem. Hats off to them. but 3 things leave me a bit hesitant:

1- Their write up is nice, but they do not address why Toyota chose to program the way they did. Why does the tranny have "executive privileges"? Even a guess would satisfy me. Things happen for a reason, Toyota is not dumb. They chose to program this way for a reason... but why?

2- I am not totally convinced the the OVTune guys are smarter than Toyota guys. I assume Toyota, for as long as they have been around, employ some of the best engineers around. I mean, Toyota is not some new start up. I have no idea who OVTune guys are, what their qualifications are, etc. It wound require a big leap of faith to allow them to alter something as critical as my ECU.

3- The truck is balance of pros and cons in all aspects, including software. For every pro, there is con. (i.e. you want bigger, sexier tires? fine, say good bye to gas efficiency). if we switch to this new "non-privileged" tuning, what is the con?

    just my honest thoughts...

It's a chastity belt of sorts.

Seriously. The goal is to keep out the hackers.
