What was the issue with the clutch?

Got your point. That's not my issue. Like I said backing up steep inclines at SLOW speeds in tight situations with a heavy load is my biggest complaint. Others have posted usefull replies to fix this. Gas mileage seems to be somewhat normal, just disappointing.

If you're backing up an incline with a load, try just slapping it in 4L. The gearing for reverse there is peachy.

I do agree with you that reverse is weird, but besides that, I'm really happy with my MT. It could be way worse (read the AT complaint threads...). Also, your low mpg's are probably due in large part to your lift. That really jacks with the aerodynamics. For example, I went from like 18-14 when I lifted, but only dropped from 14 to 13ish when I put 35s on. That would seem to indicate the tires aren't really a huge deal. Eventually I'll put 5.29s in and hopefully that will improve the mpg some.

To all who keep replying without reading the post. I never said I have any issues other than the revearse gearing while towing and the gas mileage. Seems this is a sore subject for many. Forget I even asked. Just wanted some help for my specific situation, which is backing up a steep driveway with a heavy load. I absolutely love my truck too.

Wouldn't 4L be bad for backing up, considering all the turning you have to do with the front axle...? I wouldn't want to at least especially on pavement.

Meh, I'm not super convinced that doing that in short bursts is going to actually damage your drivetrain at all. But at least 2 people on this forum have disagreed with me to the point of mouth foam (I assume), so take that for what you will.

2Lo mod seems promising and something I'll look into as well.

I’ve always been amused with people who buy midsize trucks to do heavy lifting. You’re not going to be impressed.

Fuel economy was subpar on advertised numbers. If you want to maintain them, don’t modify at all. Ever.

Update to the newest TSB. If your dealer won’t help, find someone with a cable in your local forum and get it loaded. Night and day difference.

My little 4x8 fold up is a PITA to reverse due to not being able to see it and the short length to the axle. 4Lo was a no go since I was feeling more bind than I liked. Thankfully, it is light enough that a couple attempts in 2Hi at warp speed near idle was the solution.

I have some minor issues with my MT. However I know what needs to be done to achieve my ideal handling.

    Clutch fluid accumulator delete

    TSB updates at first service

    OvTune

Everyone I have spoken to that have had these changes made says it makes world of difference.

Good luck. Hope you figure it out and can start enjoying your MT. Cuz MT rules

Mine is completely stock. No OVTune, TSB update, etc. Stock tires.

Highway MPG (summer) at an average of 70MPH is 22MPG. It was hovering at 23MPG for a few tanks, but overall average is 22. This is all highway.

That is all good with me. Toyota never said the Tacoma was a fuel-efficient vehicle. We got 4.30 rear ends, lockers, and high-clearance, not e-motors and plug-in ports.

I've got 85k on mine, aside from the tall reverse I've got no complaints. Still getting 18-20 mpg consistently running 235/85r16s.
