I like that setup! How do you like that HU? I'm currently using an in dash EQ, wondering how much better that HU would sound.
Also, what did you use in your doors?

Thanks, I dig it too. This midwoofer/tweeter combo is amazing at any price - and it's pretty cheap.

The HU is great. SQ can't be beat for under a grand & it's capable of handling an active 3-way with a decent graphic EQ and T/A. With zero signal it's totally silent to full volume. It really is a nice head unit.

In the doors I'm using - from the inside out... SDS CLD Tiles in the door card, 1/16" neoprene foam, 1/8" MLV, more neoprene, then more CLD Tiles on door skin. Doors sealed with CLD Tiles. They're pretty dead.

Yeah, the Pioneer would definitely give you more in the EQ department. Almost forgot - one more thing that sets it apart is the independent left & right EQ. That's just hard to find in a head unit and again no others I know of under a grand will do it. Err and a separate 24 bit Burr Brown D/A converter for each pair of channels.

I ordered a 80PRS yesterday. Jet.com has a $40 off $250 coupon on electronics so it ended up being a decent deal

Yeah, that's far and away the best price. I got mine from Jet. You don't get the factory warranty with it, but you can return it if it doesn't work. Got my MRX-M55 there too. They're discontinued, but Jet had (has?) new old stock.

    • I am looking for info about how to replace my stereo. I noticed some photos that show take apart process for Gen 2. Does anyone have photos like that for Gen 1?
    • I still have the OEM stereo and the CD changer doesn't work. I'm not real techie and don't care about all the extra stuff. I just want to put a good stereo w/ CD and tuner back in the double din hole that the old one came out of. Also my antenna broke off. I don't even see where under the dash I even have access to where the wire comes thru the fender. I have changed out a stereo before on older vehicles, but this dash is a new on me. Why do I need a new dash kit and what is it anyway? What else do I need besides the antenna?

There is a guide on here somewhere on getting the head unit out, but I haven't seen it in a while...maybe in the 1st gen FAQs? Anyhoo, there are several screws on the center trim piece that need to be removed. Seems like you might need to remove the center console as well, but it has been a minute. Once that's off, there are IIRC 4 screws that actually hold the head unit brackets in. Keep the brackets and screws - you'll need those to put the new head unit in...won't need a kit if using another double DIN. Just line the holes up on the new unit with the old ones.

You may want to purchase a wiring harness to keep from cutting your factory wiring - can get these from Crutchfield or possibly your local shop. Crutchfield may give you one if you buy a head unit from them...they used to. Will need some crimp connectors and a crimper (or plan to do some soldering) unless they come with the kit...you'll want the little red ones if using butt-splices. Antenna is optional unless you plan to listen to the radio (I personally don't).

Radio swap in these is pretty easy and is pretty secure if going back to a true double DIN.
