Installed a pop and lock pl5304 (the premium black version of the 5300) on my 2012 tacoma. Has anyone else ended up with a small gap between the pop and lock and the tailgate? If so, any recommendations to fill the gap?

Received and installed Pop & Lock 5300 with backup camera.
Install went well, rerouted camera cable and as previous poster indicated lubricated the mechanism before reassembly. Works great with no issues, fit is as good as the OEM.

Not sure but possibly if some who say it is loose fitting, if they did not remove the gasket on the OEM and re-insert it into the new lock it may account for why there is a space or it is loose fitting.

With the Tonno-Pro tri-fold hard cover it makes for a pretty secure setup. At least it is better than having nothing and will deter the casual opportunist.

I have also read in some of the other forums that some wished they were able to have the lock keyed the same as their ignition key. To me outside of securing the tailgate another reason not to have it keyed the same as the ignition key, would be if you were to use valet parking, you just gave out the key allowing access for all those possessions you wanted locked up in the first place. If you were on vacation for instance and your luggage was locked in the bed with laptops, camera etc. you just gave up your security.

I just installed a pop and lock. I have to say, it was pretty frustrating at times. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my truck, so maybe this 'imperfection' doesn't bother others, or maybe I am imagining it all together.

What I noticed is that the handle is not centered. It is only off by a fraction of an inch but noticeable all the same (to me anyway). It apears that the handle is slightly further to the right side than the left. Here are some pictures so you can see what I am talking about:

In spite of the poor cell phone pics, I think you can clearly see that there is more space on the left hand side than the right. I have seen pictures that others have posted in which the handle seems to fit better. Has anyone else noticed/had this issue? Did I do something wrong than I may be able to fix?

At the end of the day, its a very small issue that most people will not notice when looking at my truck. I wanted the tailgate to lock and now it does. All the same, I'd love to hear what you have to say about this.

After your post, I went and looked at mine again.
It appears to be centered with no difference on either side.

It is hard to tell from your photo, but I think what I am seeing is the gasket and the handle isn't covering the whole thing, unless it is just a shadow.

    I purchased and installed a Mod. # PL5500 from e-trailer on my 2015 Tacoma http://www.etrailer.com/tglock-2015_Toyota_Tacoma.htm
The backup camera knockout has been repositioned to the passenger side of the handle, which means you do not have to re-route the backup camera wiring inside the tailgate.
The installation of the backup camera itself is also easier. Simply unscrew the 10mm bolts from the OEM handle and bolt the entire assembly into the 10mm threaded posts in the Pop & Lock handle. There is no need to remove the wiring from the backup camera or use any hardware from the OEM handle.
    Very simple install, 15-20 minutes.

Just as a follow up, I've had my pop n lock for almost a year and a half now and have had no issues. Still works great, still looks good ( flat black like the OEM one was). I do wish the backup camera pointed up a little more than it does. At the angle it's installed in the pop n lock, it's good for watching your bumper and trailer hitch but not much more.

    CleanupBoss,
How do you like your model so far? Any issues? I have a 2015 Tacoma & I need to install a locking handle. Thanks.

I did. It works fine, just a little "sticky" sometimes. I try not to force it.

Just had to swap mine back to the OEM handle after about 4 years. The PL5300 was flexing internally in a way that made the driver side latches no release about 4 times out of 5 depending on temperature and time of day (worked fine early morning since everything was nice and cold). Not sure if this would be an issue everywhere or just in warmer climates since the truck's always been parked outside in So Cal, Phoenix, Vegas and Tahoe (summertime) for pretty much the whole time, and I usually try to park facing more north to keep the windshield from facing into the sun all day.

I had my pop and lock for 2 yrs, every winter my lock freezes up on me. I can't even put my key in the hole or won't turn at all. Specially after car wash in the cold days. I spray wd40 sometimes it helps other time can't get inside my bed at all. Thinking about upgrading to the power pop and lock. Anyone knows if it freezes to the power version of pop n lock.

Well my Pop and Lock lasted almost 2 years from my original post above. Lucky for me that I'd kept the original box the Pop and Lock arrived in where I had stored my OEM tailgate handle. The plastic piece that goes from the Pop and Lock handle and engages the internal wire opening mechanism broke off while I was trying to open my tailgate. It took about 10 minutes to figure out how to open the closed tailgate in order to remove the broken Pop and Lock handle.
My wife suggested I contact Pop and Lock for a free replacement (Doubtful given the length of time that has passed). I told her that something that has a reputation for breaking is not worth "free".
All in all, I was lucky the Pop and Lock handle broke when it did as I've got a 2 week, out-of-state duck hunt lined up for later this week. Had I been 300 miles away with a truck bed full of hunting gear, my dog and no way to open the tailgate... I would not have been amused.
Lesson learned about Pop and Lock.

Anyone have current reviews on this? What's the best option for a 2014 with backup camera?

I just bought the Pop and Lock manual system, the newer versions actually allow you to key it to your ignition key. Has anyone used the newer versions? I wonder if some of the previous longevity concerns have been mitigated...

I installed the PL5400 with Backup Camera right after when I bought my 2013 brand new (17 miles on it). The lock has lasted 5 years but ultimately broke such that it would not allow the ignition key to turn in the lock (tried both the regular use key and the original unused 2nd key, neither one worked). I kept the original latch in the PL5400 box so I had to remove the inner panel to access the lock from inside to free open the tailgate. I guess 5 years of frequent use isn't bad but I'd gladly pay for a better built lock - that's why I'm searching here on the forum. May just have to buy another lock and just consider it like a wiper blade that may often need replacement.
