I'll see you on I70 soon I guess, I hear what you're saying on variation in speed but regardless of whether the highway clears up or not i would not run that fast on the straight sections (Georgetown, Frisco-Copper). I70 is sketch enough as is and you don't wanna wreck that purdy little truck. In terms of the 4WD, it can handle it.

shoot me a PM if I can tug you out of a ditch

There is no speed limit on anything in 4HI other than engagement/disengagement, regardless of what people on TW keep saying. I drive at highway speeds (60-65mph for me) every winter in 4HI and the truck has no problems.

You are creating a false relationship... AWD vs 4WD is very different from Part-time vs Full-Time. Maybe you should research this a little...

Regardless, OP, I wouldn't exceed the speed that your manual states.

In addition, I also wouldn't be driving at 80 mph if the road conditions required 4WD unless I was begging the end up in the ditch. I don't know how to drive in the snow? I grew up in Wisconsin, nuff said...

There is a reason you almost always see 4WD trucks in the ditch, because they thought they were unstoppable in the snow!!!

I'm well aware of the differences in the drive types and its pretty damn obvious that many in this thread do not, especially those saying there are speed limits to 4wd..

And I believe(could be wrong) you cant even shift into 4wd on newer tacos if exceeding this speed limit.

It'll beep at you if you try to shift into 4H above (57mph?) and will not allow the switch to be made until you slow down

If you are driving that fast you don’t need 4H on.

I personally would not do it more because of turning with the 4H on.
I had less of a problem in my Ford. You make a sharp turn in the Tacoma even in snow... dang you get shaking.

But I’m of the mind 4H is just unecessary at those speeds. I’ll forget I have it on and it’ll be a problem.

AWD is entirely different than 4WD. Each hub can spin independently from each other. Which was designed specifically so you could drive at any speed and turn while still having 4WD capability without damaging the differentials.
I’m not sure why we are talking about why Subarus with AWD can do X and thats reasoning why 4WD can do X.

Idk about how it handles it mechanically....

But logically if you are in bad enough conditions to need 4wd engaged, you probably shouldn't be going 70-80mph in the first place... :notsure:

I have little experience in snow driving so feel free to tell me to shut the fuck up, but isn’t the whole putting it in 4wd just to go faster than you could in 2wd how people end up in a ditch?

Yessir it much is that... which is why you see so many 4wds in the ditch in bad conditions...
Because it doesn't mean you upgraded from rwd to a snowcat... its not a magic button.. but people are overly confident just cuz they have a 4x4 sticker on the rig

4X4 Does not limit you. Driving conditions are another matter. Notice how fast these vehicles are going....

Yeah, you got me. But point is the same. The freeways are littered in Utah with 4WD vehicles that make people feel indestructible. 4WD doesn't do jack to help one stop.

4wd is for improved traction to maintain forward momentum. It will help in turns as the steering tires are also clawing. But once you lose control and spin/slide it does nothing for you. You wipe out just the same, except you are possibly going much faster due to a sense of false capability.

Driving in 4wd completely changes how our trucks preform in snow and ice, especially when you buy winter tires, not AT tires.
Trucks are pretty crappy with just rear wheel drive and light beds on icy roads. It sucks!
After you drive for 4 months of winter you appreciate 4wd on hard packed wet snow, icy hills, frosty bride decks

Appreciate it doesn't mean you haul butt 80mph on slick roads... doesn't matter what tires you have on(or chains for that matter) if your cruisin past everyone and get cutoff by a dingaling in a ridgeline and have to yank the wheel... ditch is the best option for you at that point... worst is dead...

Notice how fast the clock is going too. Curious to see it at normal speed. Everyone was still obviously going too fast for conditions.

Yeah 80 mph is stupid , pretty common on the highway here to be around 60 mph on our 4 lanes in the mountains

10 years ago I was driving my 2003 Tacoma near Page, AZ in the winter. It was 4WD but I only had it in 2WD. The road looked dry. Suddenly I hit black ice, fishtailed and rolled the thing. I think I could have prevented the crash had I been in 4WD. Cars in front of me with Front wheel drive didn't slide like I did. So I always put my Tacoma in 4WD if its below freezing and there is any chance of moisture on the road. I think this has been a good discussion especially to know I am not hurting the components travelling at highway speeds.
