I read all the posts about my post that my new Tacoma sputtered at 53mph after the computer reflash. I checked the air intake hose after the filter box and sure enough it was not tight so I tightened it. Next someone suggested premium fuel. Although I had been putting mid-grade shell in it I filled it up with premium and damn it seemed to go away- runs much better. I would not swear to it but we will see as I put more miles on it- right now I only have 1100 or so miles on it.

I wish my truck had a shutter that would engage at 53 mph. Better fuel economy on the highway if that big mouth of a grill was closed off...o_O

... I'm guessing what you are feeling is the transmission racing to get to a high gear. Mine did this when I first got it but not anymore. I'm sure it went away from the learning feature. Not sure it was the truck learning me or me learning the truck though. :anonymous:

Mine has had a low throttle input miss from day one. 33k miles later, premium is the only way to make it go away.

I lied, thought the problem was fixed by running premium - but - it turned cool and I had turned the air conditioner off and it had quit shuttering at 53mph. As soon as I turned the air back on it started doing the same thing again. Toyota says it is a characteristic of the vehicle and nothing can be done. Maybe we should all get together and see if we can find a lawyer that would handle a class action lawsuit. I don't hardly believe a Judge would call it a normal characteristic if he or she drove my truck. If someone had told me while they were trying to sell me this truck that sputters and jerks were part of it I would not have bought this truck

Mine has that too, was going to get it checked out at my 5k. Low throttle cruising makes it buck a bit.

Hopefully you have better luck than I did with the dealer. I got the ole "can not replicate". I noticed before I left the dealership parking lot lol.

Is your truck a long box by any chance? I'm trying get a perfect way to replicate it and sometimes it just seems like the truck rocking on road waves.

    Hi guys,
I'm going to chime in on this subject.
I have a shudder between 1200-1800rpm. especially noticeable in 6th gear on the freeway. Uphill with low gas pedal input.
At first, I thought it was misfires-dealer checked it out...nothing
problem remained and I started using 92oct gas. this seemed to help but once it got colder... the same problem. back o the dealership and i too got the "can't replicate" B.S talk... he did, however, drive it 70 miles...funny
it does get worse now-this got me thinking - is it possible that the torque converter has issues? or the drivetrain in 2wd?
Toyota did the Gearbox TSB and all that did was shift earlier to mask the problem. The darn thing shudders like a buck sometimes... on top of that downshifting is more than tactile-you can hear it too.
any help or idea is aprechiated.
    Thank you!

I have a DCLB and I never notice any engine or drivetrain shudder. The truck in the road waves is definitely not engine feeling. The truck being a little jiggly is how I would describe the suspension feel.

I have dclb. but if i lift and coast the vibrations stop. the truck does feel a little jiggly with an empty bed.
The dealership is a complete waste of time for me.
After the holidays, I will try a newly opened dealership.
Our worktruck drives so smooth it is unreal. same 2018 Tacoma Offroad.
Seems to me, that the dealership is just lame.

It might be worth talking to the ovtune guy. I remember seeing in someone post that their truck was going in an out of Atkinson mode constantly which would make it shudder and run rough. I think ovtune made a special map to move the atkinson parameters and the issues went away.

No noticeable shudder here, usually cruise around 60-65. 6th gear definitely takes all power away and makes the truck sluggish, maybe giving a shudder feel?

I get it also 18 dbcb, feels like chop in the road. Almost rough pavement feel. Same speeds if I'm cruising on a state road it's annoying going 50-60 m.p.h. range. Did it before and after lift tires etc. And continues. Like 52-56 is where I really notice it. I'm thinking it's a rotational oscillation. Thinking drive shaft vibes.

That was me, and absolutely true when I was running 1.03B (an earlier tune). Mat saw the problem in the log I sent him, tuned out the symptoms in a test file, and presumably incorporated the changes into 1.04A release, as I had no stuttering with that. Fast forward to today, Toyota dropped a new set of calibrations and OVtune began developing files based off that "source code". Stuttering is back for me, but again we are in a development stage. Note also that not all trucks stutter, even when running the same tune file and same octane fuel.

I will give the new dealership a chance. They called yesterday and will fit me in on 12-18. Let's see what they say.
I have PM to OVtune. He seems like the person to go to for this sort of thing.
    I will keep you posted.

Been to the dealer twice- same answer, it is what it is- the truck just acts that way. Regular or premium gas no difference. Lets just all file a class action law suit and see how Toyota likes that. I would not have bought this truck if the salesman said " hey, look there is a little problem with the way it runs but as usual nobody said nothing about the truck running like shit. Wasn't looking for anything and didn't notice anything on the one I test drove.

Well, I am off to the next dealership with my problem.
I finally was able to open a case # with Toyota Care and will give the local dealership (not the one I bought the Tacoma from ) a try. They are fully aware of my problems and seem to have heard of it too.

Is it possible that studdering/ shaking may be caused by the torque converter flywheel? The service tech said something to this extent...
