Got my Tacoma back from the body shop after t-boning a driver who blew through a red light. But now my ABS, Brake and traction control lights are on all the time. The repair shop said it was the left rear (no where near the damage) so the insurance wouldn't cover it.

    2012 Tacoma TRD Off Road.

I've read this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/abs-brake-traction-control-lights-on.494620/ where the problem ended up being the harness.

I fired up Techstream and checked the code in the ABS module, but I have a different code from the one in that thread. I'm getting "C1408 Open or Short in Rear Speed Sensor LH Circuit". Can someone confirm if the same troubleshooting steps apply to this code? :fingerscrossed:

I'd be willing to bet some douchebag flatbed driver hooked a hook on the rear axle and damaged the wires.

The good news here is it sounds like the body shop gave you an accurate assessment, since it matches your scan.

But as @Muddinfun suggests, it's worth a careful exam for damage from a hauler. If you can relate the damage to the incident, insurance should still pick it up, and then pursue the hauler for compensation.

    I did some stuff.
I had this exact same scenario on my 2015. Same code and everything. tow truck driver damaged the left rear speed sensor wire when he was securing my truck to the flatbed. I crawled under mine and found a section of wire flattened/crushed. i cut out the damaged section and spliced in a temporary patch till my new harness get here. I ordered a new harness from partsgeek.com which was around $70 after shipping. My insurance adjuster is reimbursing me the cost of the harness just because she knows it almost impossible to get the tow company to fess up to stuff like that.

Perfect. I'll crawl under it after work and report back. Hopefully it's that simple of a fix. :fingerscrossed:

Most flatbed drivers are idiots. I saw a car in a body shop where a flatbed driver pushed the floor rubber drain plugs inward, hooked his hooks in the floor drain holes and ripped the floor on both sides. This was on a car that was obviously not totaled. There were T hook slots about 10" away from the floor drain holes.

That’s all it takes to damage that wire and cause those lights to come on.

Good news it I found the problem. Band news is it was likely a flatbed neanderthal. In the third pic, I'm guessing the white plug is where the rear speed sensors plug in? So I'm guessing both sides are part of one harness?

Thanks for all the help.

Yep, just as I suspected. Tell the insurance company and let them deal with it.

Pics sent to insurance company with the explanation that it looks like it was damaged during towing.

Yep they are the same harness and that white plug is where the left and right wires come together and attach to the main harness.

Glad you found my thread on what my issue was. As I was reading your thread I was going to suggest you swap the sensor from one side to the other to see if it throws a different code, but as I kept reading and from seeing your pictures, you found you issue. :fingerscrossed: Insurance doesn't give you any grief as that definitely looks like damage from the tow truck. If not, the replacement of the harness is not too hard. Just time and money with minimal tools.

Good luck with the insurance company!

@WebberLander, your post was very helpful  I'm not sure why the codes are different since it seems like the same problem, but maybe it's because of a different year. I'm just glad mine was super easy to spot. If the insurance company won't play ball then it won't be too bad of a fix. But crawling under the truck when you're in your 50's isn't as fun as it was back in the day :(

Just got an email from the insurance company saying I need to file a claim with the towing company. I see where this is going :ballchain: I'll give it another day and then just order the harness. Not having ABS in the winter in Denver is not something I want to deal with. Manually pumping brakes has been way too many beers ago :burp:
