Went to KC Rocks Recreational Park for the first time with a friend. This place is miles of off roading trails and ranges from beginner to expert level paths. My TRD is stock so I planned on sticking to beginner. Even then, the hosts warned me and gave me strict instructions. My friend has a Wrangler with 35 or 36" tires and a lift kit, so he wasn't too concerned.

    IMG_2216.jpg

I aired down to about 17-18psi and ended up going through the entire loop. I even accidentally got into the expert trail area. I AM ASTONISHED at the capability of this truck. The traction control puts Jeeps to shame. Everyone kept saying that the truck moves so smoothly that it's odd. Minimal wheel slippage and with the crawl control, I made it up 30 degree inclines without a sweat.
    IMG_2226.jpg

The approach angle allowed me to climb some intermediate level ledges and rocks without scraping anything. I did break my cheap Amazon mud guards. Lesson learned there. (Don't buy plastic mud guards). IMG_2221.jpg
    IMG_2223.jpg

    IMG_2228.jpg
At the end, it was getting late and I new that I was stuck in the intermediate/expert trail and was genuinely afraid of not getting out. There were a few creek ledges and rocks that were in the way. A kind older dude in his Jeep let us follow him out and said he would help give us a tug if we needed. This is when everyone kept asking me how I got my stock TRD there without getting stuck. Long story short, I followed the legendary Jeep guy out without any hiccups. He kept saying "well... Those Tacoma's have gone a long ways.. Never would of thought". I only wish I had photos of some of the areas.

Next time I come back, I will most likely have rock sliders and a few additional skid plates. Also, I will know that the map can be very tricky and it's easy to veer off into intermediate/expert trails. KC Rocks is amazing. If you live in KS or nearby, I'd highly recommend it.

Happy wife! We were lucky enough to find two perfect trees on the the side of the trail.. Quite the deep drive in though, this was last xmas.
It's been snowing like crazy where we're going on Saturday, should be interesting..

Great post! Looks like you did everything right, mostly by not going alone (and with an experienced offroader) and you learned a lot. Sounds like you caught the bug!

Sliders and skids are definitely necessary, but think about a tire upgrade sooner than later too. And a good inflator. And some recovery gear. And... well...

I hit up Fish Creek Wash in the Anza-Borrego Desert over the weekend. It was nice and muddy.

Took wife up a long winding dirt road to the top of a mountain in Chiang Mai, Thailand to stay for a night.

At the top, have a great GoPro vid of the climb up through the jungle area. No rain so no good mud which was a bit of a let down.

That is a sick looking Hilux! I always wondered with a Hilux vs Tacoma comparison would look like.
