Help determine amount of diff oil

I want to make sure I get the right kind of diff oil and transfer case oil.
1--Rear diff oil: 75W-85 GL-5. Not sure if its 3.1, 3.2 or 4 Qts
2----Front diff: 1.6 Qts same 75W-85 ?
3----Transfer case: 1.1 Qt SAE 75w ?
Do I need any additive for the rear diff because of the LSD?
I just got back from the dealer and their prices are outrageous. Here is their price for one quart each. I would appreciate any clarification on this. Thanks.

 

Specifics are in the owners manual.

Off the top of my head I was 4qt rear and 2qts front for a TRD OR.

It's super easy.

Toyota does not state there needs to be an additive for the LSD. I personally run 85w-140 in the gears.

Doesn't really matter which rear diff you have; still need 6 quarts total.
No LSD additive needed; it's an electronic LSD, not mechanical.

If you want some alternatives...
Redline makes a 75w85; lot's of guy's just run whatever 75w90.

Ravenol makes a SAE 75w; seems to be the popular alternative.
These also claim to meet the spec:

I regeared so gear manufacturers recommended the higher viscosity of the oil to help with load, increase heat efficiency, and reduce maintenance intervals from gear oil breakdown.

If I ran stock gears I would just run what Toyota said to.

 

I bought 6qt of Redline 75w85 for my 4x4 6MT diffs... 1.6qt + 4qt = 5.6qt.
I thought I'd have plenty, so I filled the front until it ran out. Then put the rest in the rear.
I was surprised to see that it took all of the oil, and was just at the point of running out.
Seems mine took a little bit more than the manual showed, but I had just enough with 6qt.

 

Are you confusing transmission versus transfer case? I’ve never heard of any contention over transfer case oil.

 

Interesting. The fact that the Toyota crap is so expensive is a joke.

 

I am gonna go with the Ravenol. Amazon Carries it for $15.96 for the transfer case.

75W-90 in my prerunner for the rear diff and it worked fine. Discount auto parts Carries Valvoline synthetic for $10.99/qt.

Just as an fyi, if you did want to use the specified visc, the Redline 75w-85 gl5 is not much more; $15/qt shipped.
I only used it because I didn't want to deal with any question about what oil I used if there are ever diff issues...
If interested, this is the cheapest I found: Ebay 181968651033 ; $90/six.

 

What he said, I use Redline 75W90 in diffs and Ravenol in TCase. Both 100% synthetic gear oils.

3rd gen LSD is brake simulated. Diffs are just standard open diffs.

 

I hit 40k miles and just swapped out my Front/Rear Diff, and TCase fluids last weekend. Took exactly 7quarts. I went with Valvoline 75W90 Synthetic for $12.99 a quart, and picked up a hand pump.

T Case: 1.1q
Rear Diff: 4.3q
Front Diff: 1.6q

I didn't measure these out, I bought 9 quarts. Starting with the truck level, I removed the fill Plug for one, then the drain plug and drained the oil. Cleaned up the plugs and filled each back up until it topped up. When I ended it was exactly 7qts, when I added everything up based on what was listed in the manual an the maint. sticky in this forum it also equaled 7qt.

The T case looked fresh, the diffs looked like mercury with the plugs gummed up with a ton of metal shavings.

You will need a 15/16" socket, and a 10mm hex bit. I bought one at Harbor Freight and the other at Napa when I grabbed the oil. Some people have reported issues getting the plugs out, I didn't have a problem they came off surprisingly easy. I put them back on to relatively proper torque specs.

I returned the 2 extra quarts. Took for a test drive, parked it overnight, checked for any leaks the next morning (none) and called it good. All 3 could be done in an hour.

 

The diff oil definitely gets more of a workout than the Tcase oil. Not surprised your oil was merky. I'll be doing them this weekend so I can get rid of the shavings and get some fresh oil in. I think I'll wait couple more months for the Tcase . I have gone offroading little here and there, but not enough 4x4 mileage to warrant it. My mileage is at 13000 now. I used Valvoline in the past on my Prerunner's diff, and I'll use it again on the TRD.

The T Case just happened to be the first one I pulled, and it took the least amount of oil. I figured since I was intending to swap it all out in favor of the same weight full synth oil, that I'd jus include the T case. It seemed to work out well in the end since it came out to exactly 7qts anyway.

I'd vote to just include it, if anything for piece of mind. That one had regular sized plugs also, I neeed the 10mm hex for the front diff and the 15/16 socket for the rear.

Another comment I meant to add in my first post. I collected all of the oil into the same pan, when I was done I lined up my 7 empties and funneled the old oil back in for easy disposal - I only drained collectively about 5 and 3/4 quarts, but 7 went in. That's when I went back and referenced the manual and stickies to see what they called for and saw it also equaled 7. That means that between the 3, I was short over a qt of oil. If I knew that going in I would have separated them out after each drain to see where the shortage is.

Side note: I read a bunch of posts and watched a few YouTube video's beforehand..... never realized that so many people are so heavily opinionated on their oil

 

A good point about adding more oil than you drained.
Yes, there are a lot of valid opinions on oil. What makes it more of a debate is the slight difference in viscosity, the oil brand and the warranty factor that bring up the opinions. I think we all want to take care of our trucks and not get robbed by paying $55.00 and $79.00/Qt to the dealership. It's just uncalled for. Its only oil that has been reprocessed for profit.
At the end of the day, sharing opinions and ideas in here, helps everyone make a decision.
