At home off leash i trust him, in public I use leash as I don't trust people and other dogs. I have been going to Lowe's every 3rd day after my shift with him to get him used to people and working with distractions. I wish I had the funds to do board and train but this is going great I feel, and building a good bond.

Not a huge fan of e collars. They can provide stimulus at the wrong time. Never mind if the dog is not wearing it, he might decide he’s deaf. Don’t get me wrong, they have their place. I just feel you run the risk of breaking a good dog with them.

We’d go from a tracking lead during puppy training to a 6’ for obedience and back to tracking for distance work. As you progress in distance, a more enclosed space is nice. Also helpful are high value treats (like jerky or sausage) for recall. Start with every time and work toward once and a while.

This was the process for most patrol dogs.

I agree with all you said. Ecollar do have their place as a tool in conjunction with high value reward and long leash and marking. And poor training can break a dog.
If someone thinks they can put a e collar on a dog and negative correct the dog till they listen is not using a ecollar correctly and shouldn't use one.

I have an e-collar for the dutchie

Yeahhhhhhh when he gets on a cat, rabbit, other small prey.....he could give 2 shits about that

With him, he has to be reminded who's dominant every single day still....and a leather lead and a martingale collar help....we are probably switching to an actual pinch collar to try it out when we walk in public

I don't think any of these things are necessary for anything less strong willed than a dutchie...but he needs more than a stern voice and treats right now

What's important is repetition and LOTS of time...find a ball or other reward for paying him because it's cheaper than buying treats every week

My method is based around K9 certs etc around here because my gf was a handler...they're not for everyone and not for every dog

I make sure I let Gunner get some good running and sniffing and potty breaks out of the way...then produce a reward and work with him on some stuff...then give him a minute or so with the ball...then we work on fetch and finding the ball...then back to walking etc

Whenever she’d pull, it would pull her head back around. In a matter of minutes she was super easy to walk. YMMV, she was a super smart dog.

I don't think Gunner would go for that...we used a muzzle of similar construction twice at the vet when we first got him because we didn't know how he'd do...and he panicked like crazy with it around his muzzle

Riley's always been good with kids. Today, I sent my niece out to the truck to collect him. She got him leashed and out of the truck all by herself-so proud of her. She's just 12. It helps that several years ago, the two of them played bubbles. Her brother and sister weren't so sure (Riley's probably 70 or so pounds heavier...) so they opted for "riding the dog".

He definitely earned his dinner tonight :D

They're really loose when the dog isn't pulling. When there's no stress on the leader, they can open their mouths and do anything they'd normally do (eat, drink, bark, lick themselves, etc.). It only cinches closed when they pull, and pulls their head back when they really pull. They learn quick - don't pull, no restrictions.

    Yeah.
I'm glad to have a big fenced yard for my Shibas to run in now, they are just too hard-headed and independent to be trusted off leash in an open area. Our last place had no fence, so we had one of those radio bubbles. It worked great with the small dogs, but my male Shiba figured out how it worked pretty quickly -- when out of range, it beeps first then starts shocking them, but stops after 30 seconds. I could watch him creep up on the boundary to get it to start, and then sit down and let it shock him for 30 seconds (you could see him jerk every time it shocked). Once it stopped, he would run. Usually to the neighbor's back door, he loved their dogs. Had to switch to a 30 foot lead to keep him in the yard, although he would break a collar with a plastic clasp almost immediately. He's good on a leash, they just have a strong small game instinct and will chase anything that moves. He loves when I blow leaves, so many things to chase down . . .
