I spent the last 2 hours researching and trying different codes to access first gen transmission temps using an UltraGauge MX. I finally got it working and I figured I'd share the code:

    TData: 686AF101B40000
    TCtl: 85
    RCtl: 00
    RPos: 2808
    Mtch: 41B400
    X: 0009
    /: 0005
    +: FFD8
    Out Format: 00
    Ave: 00
    Left/Right: 31

    Uh what?

guessing that there must be a temp sensor in the trans then?

What are you asking exactly? Yes, the transmission must have a temperature sensor (mine does, yours may or may not). If you have an UltraGauge MX this is the code you'll need in order to view it.

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma and just programmed my scan guage to read tranny temp today. So yes some of our trucks have trans temp sensors.

No freaking way! I love you man! Thank you!

UG says it can't be done for the 1st gen but SGs can do it so figured there had to be a way. So I upgraded to the MX anyway, had a Classic before. I tried all the value suggestions on a T4R forum with no luck and gave up, figured I'd try some other time.

Hope this works for my 01.

I'm surprised no one figured it out sooner to be honest. Hope it works for you as well.

It works! Was only on the T4R forum that I found where people were trying to get it to work with the UG. Only those with the UG Blue got it working.

Looks like the key value that you figured out was RCtl. We were all entering in a value, I never thought to try 00.

    Thanks again!

It’s been figured out for a while, maybe people haven’t posted it in obvious places. The important part of the code is the PID which is 01B4. Sometime in 01-04 Toyota decided to allow the ECU to report the trans temp over OBD. All trucks have a temp sensor that reports to the ECU, but not all share that info with the OBD port.

Whatever you say. I read dozens of threads and hundreds of posts on multiple forums and no one provided a working solution.

Ok. All of the code came from Scangauge anyway. The problem was converting it to Ultragauge and getting a readout.

For the UG? Where was this info posted? I've been searching & keeping an eye out for a while on multiple forums & have never seen anyone get it to work with the UG for 1st gens until this thread. SG yes, that was discovered many years ago. We were all entering in the wrong value for RCtrl. No one figured to try 00 for RCtrl.

Thank you OP, Finally someone figured it out. I've been on the edge and was almost about to get a SG only because the UG didn't have the transmission temp. But now that there is a code I placed an order for the UG. Cant wait to try out this code once it get here.

The torque pro app also supports trans temp, I believe the free app would as well if u get the pid info correct. That said I'm looking at the UG MX because I would like a full time guage vs randomly when I connect my phone.

The UG Blue also supports trans temp. I opted for the standalone UG cause I didn't want to use my phone or an old phone for monitoring like UG's reasoning. I rather have the UG mounted "permanently" in my truck.

I'm on my second UG now, only got the UG MX this year in the last group buy in hopes that trans temp would work & finally today that happened. Had my UG Classic for 8 yrs without any issues and I choose the UG over the SG at the time knowing that trans temp wouldn't work. IMO the UG is far better than the SG, especially the updated MX over the Classic.

Based on someone on the T4R forum who speculates that RCtrl set to 00 might not be reporting accurate temps, I tried 01-09 & even 0A, all work & gave the same exact readings. I'm gonna keep testing this.

After stumbling on this thread....I have never monitored any of this in my truck.

Should I be? or is this just for people operating outside of standard "daily pavement driving" routine.

    anyone care to share experience?

Hmmm... I'd say this, there are a lot in the camp that by the time the necessary OEM gauges throw a dummy light or start moving into a danger zone, the damage is already done.

I'm on the fence myself. On a Honda Accord the coolant gauge started to show overheating and I was able to reduce load and turn on the heater, no damage was done, the low coolant issue was fixed when I got home. But for Toyota, I've read of complaints that by the time the needle moves, you are already in a bad threshold, and in regards to the trans, the 'dummy light' comes on when you are pretty much already killing the trans.

    Thanks for that.

I looked at the Ultraguage MX and it looks like during the time of purchase, you get the "software" loaded to suite your vehicle and thats it...pretty much just stays connected or you pull it out when you want to see whats up...

Question is, can It be reprogrammed on the fly or do I have to just buy another one for another vehicle? lets say I get another vehicle that it works with, something on the list of makes and models that it is compatible with...

    Anyone know?
