    FYI I recently saw on my local FB tacoma groups where several guys had total driveshaft failures at the U joint and they never greased them. It’s probably the most commonly overlooked basic maintenance item on the truck

    Yup I saw that too. It's what lead me to this lol. To my knowledge it's been 30k miles. So it's time but not too overdue. Will likely have it taken care of in the next two weeks

    watch how you store your grease gun or else a puddle of red sticky substance may be on your garage floor...i found out the hard way.

    Greasing the u-joints until grease oozes out is fine, but don't overgrease your slip yoke...that is if you 2nd gens have one (I'm not sure). On the 1st gens, over-greasing the zerk on the slip yoke can cause it to fail. Plus it'll sling a ton of grease everywhere underneath the rear of the truck when you're driving.

    Haha! That is true. I have mine hanging on the garage wall and was not careful about the hoses. In the summer heat, both guns oozed a bit on to my derped grille and ruined a couple spots.

    I looked and felt around the slip yoke and couldn't find a zerk on @Kidwidataco 's. Or do you pump it in the end with a needle adapter?

    Our's has a zerk right at the last joint before the driveshaft goes into the rear diff (2 actually, one for the u-joint and the other for the slip yoke) It isn't right on the slip yoke but it provides the grease for it

    Thanks! I didn't look near the rear diff for a fitting other than the u joint. We got all five on the shafts and checked the u bolts. I looked and felt all around the carrier bearing and found nothing. @Kidwidataco now has a grease gun, so he will be able to hit that if there is one.

    Some 3rd Gen folks have installed a zerk on the bottom of the carrier bearing. I have a couple laying around and have been thinking about doing that.

    I do need to look under there again since I think the slip yoke for the 2nd and 3rd Gens is at the carrier bearing? You question has me doubting things. :D

    yeah don't take my word for it, I'm sure your guys' driveshafts are entirely different than ours...but I imagine the same rule applies for the slip yoke if it is indeed greaseable...don't want to over grease it

    Harbor Freight sells them for cheap, although they aren't that expensive at regular auto parts & hardware stores. Make sure you get the kind that has the flexible/bendable hose... the solid hose kind makes it really hard if not impossible to get them onto the zerk fittings

    HF also sells flexible hoses and other parts if needed. I do like the one that I linked above from HF because it has a pistol grip, which makes it a bit easier for doing it with just two hands.

    I remember reading about it in the 1st gen 'what did you do' thread, too much grease and it can't slip the way it is supposed to or something like that, restricts it's movement. I imagine you have to pump a lot in there though. Before I knew any better I used to put a bunch in there and it would make a freaking mess under the truck for the next week of driving, grease getting flung out all over the place
