Thanks. Planning on getting my license, but always wondered what would happen if you didn’t. On the other hand, being tracked down by old timers could be fun.

Join a free club. They get together a few times a year and do events just for that. One group hids a transmitter and the other finds it for practice / fun. Plus the old experienced guys (Elmers) will show you every cool trick in the book and probably give you a ton of free stuff. It's a really cool community.

Just as a note to anyone going through here and is curious, if you don't want to take the test ( which is actually real easy ), you can pay for a gmrs license and get a gmrs radio. To give you an idea, CB works on 4watts. GMRS is up to 50watts I believe now.

But I say still go for ham. There's a thread on Ham BS in here. Say hello if you have any questions or want to shoot the shit. Don't want to clog the thread in here with too much ham talk haha

What do you mean? Everyone knows mall crawling requires a mirror like shine on your tires.

Another backlash from being an unlicensed user of Amateur band radio is that you will be shut out of using repeaters because without a valid callsign, anybody can quickly tell if you’re not legit.

Well truth be told I carry all the time, MRE's, water, small tent, propane single burner stove, tools, fishing pole, first-aid kit, shovel, tarp, tow chain with a comealong, woodsmanpal, battery powerpack, recovery ramps and which ever firearm I put in that day. I have a besttop, along with a sleeping system. The gear is stowed under the bed system, locked of course. I reside in a rural area and have always carried enough crap to stay away for a few days. Just saying.

Can you please elaborate more on 'Self Defense Item or two'....I've been looking at difference options. I live in California so carrying a firearm in my truck isn't an option for me.

    Thanks in advance!

I always have a knife on me and usually a carry gun. Sorry that's not much help to you in California.
