The Tacoma has always been designed and manufactured in North America. It is not a Japanese vehicle, nor ever has been, other than its parent company happening to be based in Japan. From the get-go with the Tacoma, the idea was not to have it be overly influenced by Japanese aesthetics, design or ideas. They set up the old design studio and assembly plant for the 1st gens in California to achieve that.

The first Gen Tacoma exterior was designed in California by an American, Kevin Hunter, and that tradition has carried on.

FWIW, for those who may have vehicles subject to a NHTSA Safety Recall and are concerned about personal liability, the best info I found is below:

“The good news is that the majority of defective vehicles are recalled well before they cause drivers or passengers harm. However, if you are the owner of a vehicle that has been listed in a recall, it is within your best interest to seek repairs/replacement as soon as possible.

If you drive your vehicle after you have been informed of the defect and advised not to drive it, and you are injured in an accident as a result, you may be considered partially liable for your damages and unable to recover maximum compensation in a product liability suit.”

    Also...

    “Contributory Negligence”

“When it comes to deciding who is at fault in an accident and who consequently should be responsible for any injuries or damages, courts will first look at whether a party was negligent and then determine if another party contributed to that negligence. If more than one party is at fault, the doctrine of contributory negligence comes into play. This doctrine holds that if more than one party shares blame for an accident liability will be divided among them. For drivers of vehicles under a recall notice, if you decide to delay or ignore the notice to bring your vehicle in for repairs and later get into an accident, you could be held partially responsible for the accident because you knew about the unsafe nature of your car and consciously chose not to take the steps necessary to fix it. This rule would apply even if the defective part instigated the crash, so it is important to take action once you know about the defective part to limit the risk of financial responsibility.”

As of right now there is nothing saying do not drive, and most owners won't even know until Januaury anyway. But, this is good info to know.

I'm in for my 10k service this morning and the Escondido Toyota service tech advised me that I'm on the interim recall list. He stated that once corporate has the parts lined up, letters will be going out and to schedule an appointment when I get that letter. No fusses over it and they were really good about.

I liked that you forgot to mention that the second gen, which is the best gen so far, was Japanese designed.

The 4th gen will be based on the TNGA platform, and its being designed in Japan.

Mike sweers is being brought in for input, but I don’t think TofA has sole control this time.

Don't worry your engine is falling through the frame rails as we speak and your head gaskets are a c-hair away from blowing

I'd venture to say about 97% of the complaints were normal wear and tear.

The frame recall applied to all Tacoma’s going back to the late 1990s.

Let’s be honest it wasn’t Toyota’s fault. It was dana core an American based company

Also includes Tundra, Sequioa, and I believe they are looking at adding some 4 Runners too, must be something they did wrong in the prep or coatings.
