Don't sweat it, Charlie. You take good enough care of that thing that if/ when you decide to sell it, you'll get more than KBB says it's worth.

 

I use techniques I learned from my friend with the Rolls-Royce who lives in Hong Kong, including using chopsticks to pick dirt out of the the plastic engine cover and putting corn starch on the carpet to get rid of odors.

 

I think there are far better things to obsess about. One good fender bender and the value drops by half, and you can't control someone running a red light.

Drive it and don't worry about it.

Around here older Tacomas sell for way over blue book. My buddy was looking at a first gen that blue booked for about 7k, the guy was asking 12 or 13 and I'm sure he got it.

This is the problem with older used vehicles. If you can't do the maintenance yourself, they're not always worth keeping. Brake jobs are easy to do yourself and the parts are cheap. A/C work is always expensive. Maintenance costs are the cost of owning the vehicle. It is not an investment like a house is. Cars are money pits. The only way to make money off cars is to buy something old and desirable and fix it up.

Lots of nice new trucks coming out these days and unemployment is low, thus no one wants our old trucks.

 

For fucks sakes Charlie, don't worry about your resale value. I've been adding a shit ton of shit onto mine, and I'm not worried about what I'm going to get for it in 10 years. KBB says mine is worth $14,500 in OK condition. My dad paid $12,950 for it, so we got a pretty good deal. I'll probably sell it for $3,000 in 2023, when I'll be buying my TRD Sport.

The rear brakes were less than $200. The front brakes I got ripped off and I can tell you I will NEVER bring my truck back to the dealer for brake work. They originally wanted almost $1,700 for calipers, pads, and rotors, plus labor. My dad was out of town at the time, so my neighbor contacted the dealer and gave them a piece of his mind. The dealer dropped it to less than $1,300.

 

This is also the same dealer that didn't properly secure my hood when I brought my truck in for inspection, resulting in it flopping up and down as I got onto the highway...

 

Never take your car to the dealership unless it has warranty. When our cars are out of warranty, we take it to a brake shop to get their regular maintenance, and go to a clean mechanic in town if an unusual issue pops up.

 

And to get inspected...

I don't have to pay for safety inspection (because my truck always gets a clean bill of health) and I get a free loaner. I'll be giving them one more chance next year. If they fuck up and don't latch my hood AGAIN, I'm done.

 

You're putting entirely too much faith in KBB...all this proves is that KBB is not as reliable a source as many believe/take it to be

 

The dealer is full of idiots. They took 3 hours to diagnose my mom's Rav4 with a faulty battery. Her automatic trunk door was jamming, and they opened up the motor that controls it. The problem was the battery not having enough juice to reach back there.

 

When it comes to truck mods, I don't give a FUCK about state inspections...

As stated in my signature, I don't care if my mods violate the Geneva conventions!

 

Luckily blue book hasn't really been the trusted resource since the 90s if you want to know the true value of any vehicle you have to do actual market value research. See what comparables are being sold for in your area. Blue book doesn't actually do that
