Been a long week, tough decision coming up for me too. Tested car seat in the back of the taco today. No bueno, it fits but my wife’s knees are squished against the front glove compartment. We have the 4Runner for the family vehicle so no issues with needing a car for my son. I’m just questioning whether I should keep the Tacoma or not with less than a year to go from paying it off. Couple options I could do here. 1. Private sell make a bit of cash turn around go buy full size truck or SUV. 2. Keep taco pay it off this coming year, then go buy an conservative DD make taco into dedicated trail rig. 3. Trade it in on new DD vehicle. Take a loss on all mods.

Currently leaning towards 3. At the moment. My son will be here in less than 3 months and I already have a decent trade in place getting a good price from the taco. Also yes I’ve considered a DC Tacoma, back seat isn’t really all that more spacious from the access cab. Now with our family growing I feel a better option would be a full size capable of towing a trail rig later on that I can beat on more efficiently rather than my DD. It will suck getting rid of the taco, but I’ll get another down the rode one day. What’s everyone’s thoughts?

You’re too funny. Dedicated trail rig. You’re about to have a new baby and think you’ll be able to go to the trails!!!

Test out different car seats. Diono Radian RXT is supposed to be more compact than most. Car seat’s size makes huge difference.

Also, even a huge car seat fits just fine in the middle spot, with both front seats being able to move back pretty far.

    Truck stuff
Simple answer is do what you feel is best for you and your family. I grew up with my parents having a 4 door car and an extended cab Mazda pickup. Back seat in the truck was probably smaller than your current truck and we did a ton of trips with my sister(2yrs older than me) and myself in the back. I'm guessing when we were in car seats we used my moms little 4 door car most of the time. If your wife enjoys or at least doesnt mind driving your truck some it would be easy to use the truck if 1 of you need to go out and the 4runner stays with who ever is taking care of the kiddo. If the wife is down with that then you could still get a different DD once the trucks paid off in a year like you said.

    Always next month.

I had gotten a DC originally b/c I knew I'd be needing it for kids, but shoulda woulda coulda...
Right around the time your baby is due, I am looking at getting a new vehicle. Just had my 2nd kid a few weeks ago, and once we get a second base I'm about to see how the infant car seat + high back booster works out in my DC. I've been considering just about everything, and I'm not in love with anything on the market right now. Tacoma/midsize trucks are too small inside, full sizes are too big outside, SUV/crossovers don't seem to be doing anything for me, etc. 4 runner is fine, but expensive and old. At the end of the day I bet I end up with another Tacoma just for the sheer fact that everything else blows just a little bit more than it.

I got a question you might be able to help with... I just put in an ARB dual compressor to eventually run a rear locker but I also want 4.88 gears as well so I can run 35s and gain lost power back. Do you have to buy 4.88 gears and a locker kit separate? I the answer is probably yes and if so what should I buy first?

You’ve never met my wife she enjoys wheeling and camping just as much as I do. We don’t plan on letting having a kid dictate how we want to live our life still even if it was a bit earlier than planned. ;)

Yea that’s the hard part right now! She supports my decision whatever I decide. This is becoming more of a convience choice for me than anything. Switching the vehicles is an easy solution just more of a hassle for the first few years

We’ll see depends on the trade I want to do. I’d rather not deal with the hassle of private selling or parting out and reverting back to stock to be honest. With my kiddo on the way I’m just ready to offload or decide to keep it before the end of this year. I do have a lot of goodies though I’ll let you guys know if I do decide to part out..
