Help,Cannot Remove Nut (rounded) to instal bracket

Hello,
I’m trying to install a font 32” LED Bar on the lower bumper, got the brackets from caliraised, but I was not able to remove one of the nuts from the frame.

I used a wrench and a socket and eventually the nut just worn out and seems rounded to the point where there isn’t much grip on it.

What should I do or what other options I have? I was looking at other tools for this issue, but not sure I want to risk breaking the bolt.

Hardware stores should have a bolt back out bit that fits to a drill. They work for me.
Try Ace Hardware or your local hardware store.

 

Forgot to mention, my Truck is a 2019 Off Road 4x4.

MJ-12, there isn’t much room for the bolt, there is enough room on the but side though.

 

Got a pic? I use screw extraction pliers often on stripped hardware.

I have used these professionally for a while and they're tough and work very well.

 

Can you get a good bite with vice grips? Could also hammer on a slightly smaller 12pt socket you don't mind giving up - but that should be one of the last resorts.

In the future, make sure you're using the correct size wrench/socket and try to use the 6pt socket or open end of wrench when really torquing on fasteners.

Yes, I may be able to get a good grip, but a little afraid to break the bolt and yes, lesson learned on the type of tools used... used bought those 6pt sockets for future projects.

Any other options as bar as installing other bars that don't require these brackets?

 

Is that a bolt or a stud on the frame? If it's a bolt, replace it if it shears. If it's a stud then you'll have to find a replacement or drill it out and use a bolt if it shears. I wouldn't worry about it shearing though. Either way you gotta get the nut off then worry about sheared hardware.

Those pliers will work well for this. The pliers have one hell of a gnarly bite to them which is why I used them over vise grips.

That doesn't look too bad... should be able to use vice grips or even channel locks. I assume you're torquing the correct direction? lol, have to ask.

 

I'm not sure, looks like a flat head bolt in the other end. I'll look into this pliers. thanks.

 

I was looking into similar items, but the bolt is a little long, do you know if they have long sockets?

 

I may try with the vice grips/other similar tools. Yes, going the right direction, thought about that initially too myself lol.

Only the nut comes off the aluminum crash bar. The bolt is welded in place.

 

Cut it off and replace the bolt.

I end up having to remove broken bolts, nuts, studs etc hundreds of times a year at work. If you want to use the nut / stud removers like posted above go ahead but if you lack the skills to get a new shiney nut off then advanced tools may not go so well either. Not trying to be a dick but there is a skill required to get broken hardware extracted / removed.

If that is a serrated flange nut against aluminum with a carriage bolt on the other side cutting will be the best coarse of action.

 

If that’s the case cut it off, remove the crash bar and then drill the bolt out and replace with a normal bolt.

 

Based on these latest comments, I think I should work with an experienced person that can help me with this. I have an appointment with the dealer for something else so I’ll ask about this.

I was on a roll with my mods, but this will have to wait lol.

Small pipe wrench works well on stripped nuts.
