You can stop the rust by using a rust converter. I know that making a white vinegar based slurry using Bar Keepers Friend (powder form) works on tools, etc... Use a tooth brush as an applicator. I've never used this on a vehicle but it works on everything else so why not give it a shot? However I would tape the area off to keep this stuff off the area that has paint. Use this only on the rust exposed area.

As for the reddish brown rust stains on the paint, that's a whole other issue. I suspect that the rust migrated into the paint and there might not be anything you can do about it other than to repaint the truck.

The big thing is to stop the rust though.

The Bar Keepers turns the rust to a black color. I think it converts the rust to phosphorous oxide, which is stable and stops corrosion. Then you can spot paint the area or keep it as is. Just be sure not to get the Bar Keepers on your paint because it is abrasive, but it's a mild abrasive. It's also handy to have around the house.

The important thing is to stop the rust.

A really good 2 bucket hand wash first then a clay bar might help !

Wonder if an iron remover like IronX would help.

Can't recommend Bar Keepers for cleaning up metal and other surfaces around the house.

    Wash the truck
Treat with an Iron X spray.
    Clay bar the whole thing
May need to use a polisher to clean it up.

I would not use Bar Keepers Friend. That stuff is virtually commit and is as abraisive as wet sanding.

They have rust converters that are paint safe no need to use a product intended for entirely different uses.

OP - The Bar Keepers idea was meant as a suggestion, not a best practice or best method...more like a McGuyver quick cheap fix idea :anonymous:

The real question is what do you do about those blood stains

went to my mechanic shop and he put turtle wax hard compound on in a small area with no wash and looks almost new, ill have a pic 2m just to show others with this problem but the bigger pic is the rust on the cab but that'll be for another time plus my headache rack is causing the blood stain so that also needs to be fix or else the cleaning would be useless

Be real careful with Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound! Although it will temporarily remove the rust stains, it also removes a good deal of paint along the way. And it's aggressive enough that although the surface looks cleaner / better, there's probably a good deal of marring now that will need further polishing to really make it shine.

I too would suggest first taking the rack off and dealing with the source of the staining. Clean it, sand it, neutralize the rust, then prime and paint it to prevent everything from starting all over again. (And that's going to be much harder than it sounds.) While the rack is off, use a product like Iron X to dissolve the staining on the paint. Only then would I look into clay and polishing steps - followed by a wax, synthetic sealant or coating to protect the new surface.
