I think the idea is you can get out if you get stuck on a muddy jobsite. It’s a true E-locker as well, with an engage switch, not simulated LSD. I’ll have to check out if it disengages at speed.

I'm more shocked with the fact that a new truck doesn't have AC. Is that the case with the "tradesman" Tacos too?

Its also the first time I’ve rolled down a window by hand in ages.....and......what is super annoying......no electric locks. You gotta use the key to unlock both doors, and if the passenger door is locked, you gotta reach over to unlock it.

Steel wheels too. Actually kinda cool for being extremely basic 2wd trucks, but with the E-locker. Brand new 2018s.

Oh sure mud sucks. But yeah just have to get something appropriate for what you will be driving on. 4x2 with a locker can go lots of places. But there was a trail I was on this year that I needed 4Lo not for 4x4 but for the lower gearing to get over a really steep section safely. Most people won't be doing that though.

If you are motivated enough, you can buy the right junked third gen and do a conversion. Would it be better than taking the hit on a private sale? I don't know. But if you take enough pictures and make a nice thread it would result in a bunch of likes on TacomaWorld and, to some, that is invaluable.

OP, I also wish you had gotten a 4x4. That would have saved me from reading the stupidity in this thread and becoming dumber for it.

Only mod I really have planned for my truck is a locker. Like I said in my previous post, for 98% of us the 4x4 isn’t necessary because the truck will be a daily. Doesn’t mean people don’t buy them, but I see a lot of threads on this site where people talk about “the 4x4 has never been engaged”. Everything about the 4x2 fit my lifestyle better. Being in SoCal made the decision even easier. All of my friends have 4x4’s. Out of the 10-15 of them I know TWO have used 4WD and it was a pulling contest against EACHOTHER, haha.

My only other Tacoma buddy bought his two months after I got mine. He has not touched the 4WD once. He uses the “well what if I need it one day”. Meanwhile he spent nearly $12k more for his truck than I did.

Last post for me on this. Enjoy the truck OP. Especially living in San Diego (I was born and raised there...I am one of the few “natives”), the 4x4 isn’t necessary. Cool to have, sure, but for the $13k you are gonna lose swapping to a 4x4 there are ways of dealing with snow and sand that are much less. I mentioned two in my previous post.

I’ve driven a 2wd highlander in big bear and mammoth multiple times, with both ice on the road as well as with a small storm going through at -3 degrees (super cold for California, lol). There was a whole cabin of us in mammoth and not one of us had 4WD in that snow storm

Well. All I have to say is get the right recovery gear, wheels, lift and learn to drive in the sand whether 2wd or not. I take my 2wd to the same spots as my girl takes our Wrangler out in the desert and we both make it. I just rely on momentum and logic. No matter what, we do both get stuck at times but always get out and that's the fun of it. Another thing, try not to ride alone.
But, like others said. Lockers, winches, and my new toy (Deadman) will also help just as much as a 4wd. Not sure even if I had the choice again, if I still would choose 4wd. Seems an extra cost I was able to put towards other goodies.
