Yes, i was wondering if it is possible to just "simply" remove the ignition cylinder on a 2019 tacoma, and replace it with an older version that just uses a regular key? Or, just is there anyway to either "unplug" some wire or something, so one can just use a regular key in the new tacomas? I am seriously considering buying one, and this is just one of those issues that I am wondering about. thanks!

Exactly why is it enough of an issue to where you want to replace the push start?

The model I am looking at, does not have "push start", and starts with a key. But the key is one of those that has the chip in it, so the truck can only be started with the original key, or a duplicate made for around $500 at the dealership, which is ridiculous. We all need duplicate keys at some time or the other, as they just wear out. I don't want to pay $500 in the future, to have a duplicate key made. I have replaced the ignition lock cylinder on my 1st generation tacoma twice already. The ignition lock cylinder with a cylinder that one can key the lock on, to match the original key, is around $150, with labor to install it at around $80. This is far cheaper than buying a new key to replace the new chip keys. Mainly, it just bugs me to get a truck that only comes with two keys, and can't be just copied for around $2 at the local hardware store!

because you are paying 35k+ for a truck and are worried about the possibility of paying $500 years from now

Pretty sure you can get valet keys made at the dealership for like $40.

...because one key should wear out in about 20 years. Two keys...so that extrapolates out to 40 years.

You’re not actually saving anything when yo consider parts and labor and the potential cost for key replacement.

You will still need the chip in the vicinity because the programming is in the ECM. Without the chip present the truck will not start. So, unless you can deprogram the computer, you have to take it like it is.
I had a dakota for 13 years with the chip fob and used the same key all those years, just had to change the battery a couple times.

Unless it's changed since 2017 SR and SR5 have keys as well as all manual transmission Tacomas. Note: even keyed models have chip key that need to be programmed, pretty sure that's any new vehicle in the US to meet anti theft regulations.

How about changing out the frame with a stainless one because the factory one will wear out from rust in about 8 years if you live in salt states.

I think this is the first time I've seen someone be upset with their vehicle coming with 2 keys, let alone labeling it as something that would prevent a purchase. I'm not a key expert by any means but I'm pretty sure the whole point of a chip key is an added layer of anti-theft protection. You know, so someone can't go to a hardware store and $2 later have a key to steal a brand new truck. Love it or hate it, technology is a part of new vehicles and that's not going to change. Sir, maybe a new vehicle just isn't for you.

Ok folks, let's move past the "Why? That's Crazy!" part and on to the practical advice that we expect from a Tacoma forum.

Yes, it can be done. What you are doing though, is effectively defeating your vehicle's best security. Once this is defeated, you will be able to start the truck with a "regular Toyota key" as will anyone with a screwdriver/hammer/vice grips (the tools of an oldschool thief). The simplest way to accomplish this is to take one of your new fancy keys and break out the small transponder (there are posts, etc on doing this here) and simply place it near the keyhole under the steering column shroud. This way, the "security" is always "authorized" and any key that matches the tumblers will pass.

What I will suggest to you however, is to simply ask that the dealer include whatever extra keys you need at time of sale. They DO NOT need to be the ones with the remote, as will come with the truck. You can use the older transponder only (puffy black head toyota key)keys. They are not nearly as expensive to purchase or program. Also, any competent locksmith can do the same thing rather inexpensively as well. I prefer these keys as less bulk, but the OR made that issue go away (pushbutton, keys never leave the pocket. Might go Lexus card...).

Hope that helps and good luck with that new truck and whatever you do.

    EDIT:

Key you will get with truck (x2. This is a G, but the H is similar, different grove):

Oh, another note.... you can ALWAYS make an old school key (toyota blank, I mentioned in a past thread) to keep in your wallet in case you lock yourself out. I always recommend having one at the house as a backup plan.

EDIT: It won't start the truck, but it will open the door... so you can get your keys that you stupidly locked inside.
