Nah 26 isn't too old. We had a few older guys in the department when I was an undergrad.

Go mechanical and get an internship where you think you want to work. I quickly realized the automotive industry isn't for me and headed towards heavy industry.

I graduated last may from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, TN with my BSME. I am currently a Test & Development engineer at an automotive supply company. I have been racing go karts, late models, etc. since I was a little over 4 years old so my internships while in school were for NASCAR teams. I honestly miss being an engineer on a race team because it was way cooler & more interesting to me than passenger car automotive supply. The biggest downfall of engineering in motorsports was the schedule. I know that I would like to venture outside of automotive in my career, just waiting for the right place and the right time!

I grew up around CNC machines, lasers/waterjets and all kinds of fabrication equipment so automation as well as designing (been using SolidWorks since I was 13) have always intrigued me.

I also take my F.E exam mid June!

Congrats. I’m EE, graduated about a year ago and took the FE pretty much right out of school. It wasn’t too bad. I felt kind of iffy about it once I finished, but ended up passing the first time. Good luck.

Definitely not too old, one of my best buddies when I was in college was 32 lol But don’t let them get your guard down, engineering does require a lot of applying equations so very math intensive no matter the field.

Honestly it’s gonna seem biased because I’m a ME but mechanical is the way to go for any industry with maybe electrical being the close second (but that one is WAY harder I think). Any field needs mechanicals, even aerospace companies so jobs are more broad and abundant.

For example I worked on a SAE Baja car my whole college career and my senior design was building a suspension setup for it....aaaaaaaand my first job was working on nuclear subs lol so yeah man, it’s a good time. Just be prepared for some no fun times in college. All those engineering homework memes are no joke lol

I'd say its almost easier if you're a little bit older. First time around in college I had more fun than study, and my less than desirable degree was a result. I went back when I was 34 and was much more disciplined. Going back to school was like a job at that point. I took it very seriously and got it knocked out fairly quickly and without much trouble. I focused on robotics and controls in school, and now work for the gov't in a radar test facility.

I agree with your sentiment. Went through civil and am running my own civil/land surveying firm so can't say it really let me down. That said, if I were to start from scratch, i'd either of gone into mechanical or electrical. Gotta be able to understand math fully and "see" it while deriving equations. I could muscle through the derivations in fluid/soil mechanics, but hated Leplace tranformations and Calc 4.

not environmental , but I do deal with the environment a lot as I am chopping it to pieces for a new housing development! What do you do/want to do as an Environmental?

Don't you have to have 5 years before you can get PE?

In Texas they decoupled the experience from when you can take the test.

So now you can take the PE exam first and then when you get your 4-8 years of experience you can apply for your license.

I just finished two years at a community college. I will be starting at Tennessee Technological University in the Fall to get my BSME with a concentration in mechatronics. I'm really excited to join the Baja SAE team, I just hope I have the time for it.

    Any mechatronics engineers in here?
