Edit: I found the brain under the dash. It was easy after tracing wires back. My module did light up the LED when plugged in but it immediately went out. I couldn't reprogram it. I could start my Taco with the key left in the ignition and using the remote start fob. So I knew the bypass module was dead but the rest worked properly. I decided to purchase a new 5.PKTI module off ebay already programmed for my truck and key version. Tonight I plugged in my module, inserted the key, and programmed it. It worked the first time! I tested the remote start and it worked again!

More info in the thread at the 12volt.com: https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=144981&get=last#733376

I have a 2010 that the previous owner had a Directed Electronics (DEI, Viper, etc) remote start installed when almost brand new. It has worked flawlessly for me until this week. Now it cranks but won't fire before stopping the cranking. It starts fine with the key. I measured the fuel pressure and it's very strong.

So, I want to find the location of the "brain" module within my Tacoma and get the model # off it. Start troubleshooting the unit. Where do they typically install these? Behind the radio? Dash? Under the the steering wheel panels?

Any Mods? One. Maybe two, tops...
Probably nothing wrong with the Smart Start, before digging into the dashboard I would check the battery. If you don't have enough CCA because your battery is degraded, that is what will happen.

I hadn't considered that. I will have the battery load tested and report back. I know the voltage is good because I recently checked, 12.9 volts at rest.

If you still need to find the brain, easiest way is to find the wiring for it and trace that back. I'd start at the OBDII port. find the 2-3 wires spliced into that wiring bundle and follow them till you hit the brain. the wiring may be tessa-taped over to keep it hidden. When I install RS systems, I make them virtually invisible to anyone not looking for it. I also see lots of them installed with wires hanging all over the place and it looks terrible.

Update: I found the "brain" it was under the kick panel behind the parking brake pedal. I was able to get it out of the kick panel from the top and between the parking brake and panel, gaining access to the box.

I was able to find the valet/tach program button and the LED on the box. I pushed the button within 5 seconds of starting the truck but the LED on the "brain" would never go solid. I put a multimeter on AC voltage and tried to measure AC voltage on the purple white wire going into the brain. I couldn't get any voltage to how on the meter. I think my Tach sensor lead has a broken connection.

I would just have it reprogrammed with virtual tach. Unless you’re in a very cold area
