So I have a 2016 Tacoma double cab long bed with tow package with the V6, I changed the oil this weekend and noticed a fair amount of fluid on the passenger side frame and in a few other places .I followed the fluid back to the steering pump and it seemed to be coming from the metal line going into the pump. I cleaned everything up , ran the motor for a few minutes and turned the wheel back and forth a few times and didn't see a leak. After the truck sat for a few minutes there was some dampness around the line going into the pump. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the pump under warranty so all is good for now, little pissed this happened to a 3 year old truck, hoping its just a one time deal! The dealer said they made a note of it and will forward it to Toyota for future reference . So give your underside a good look next time you're down there, my steering was fine and there was plenty of fluid left in the reservoir , I'm not sure how long it had been leaking for but it wasn't something you would notice unless you had the skid plate off.

Sounds like you lucked out, usually when it's wet over there it's coming from the timing cover

Same issue with my 2016. Had the ps pump replaced in early November because there was fluid on the bottom of the pump. Noticed a spot on the floor today, checked the bottom of the ps pump and it’s wet again. Dropping at the dealership tomorrow morning for the to investigate further.

Timing cover oil leak....have them put UV dye in the engine oil then check with a black light where it is leaking from. Timing cover leaks are happening to quite a few.

That is a pretty involved job, hopefully they fix it up plus give you a loaner.

They’re providing a loaner. Luckily I’m still under the 3/36 warranty. 3-4 day job from what they said.

Fingers crossed. Wish they would’ve figured it out the first time though

My parts list is two pages long from replacing the timing cover gasket. It is a very invasive process that involved removing the engine in my case. I heard some had it done with the engine still in, some have had it removed. Play it on the safe side, open a case with Toyota and request a factory extended warranty. I got a look the internal paperwork, and the dealer cost for the repair in my case was around $3,000.00. Gone are the days where you can swap a 350 timing cover in about 30 mins I guess :(

Better hope you never need to replace that timing belt!

@btaco623 - How long ago did you have the timing cover gasket replaced? Did it resolve the issue? Have you had any issues related to the repair?

I've only put about 700 miles on it since the repair. I see no leaks at this point. Trans seems to be shifting harder 1-2 with noticeably more shudder as well...could just be the cold weather since it's return, but I'll be keeping and eye on it. Also had the dome light pop out, looks like it was broke when they fixed the leaking 3rd brake light some time ago. Rare to see something NOT get broke when the entire truck has been taken apart for one reason or another. That's all for now, but i'm sure more problems are coming.

Edit- Those are the only issues related to the repair for now...still fighting some that were present before the repair as well

I'm sure (hoping) the tech that repairs my tacoma is a senior tech. I know they're experienced and frequently perform more complex repairs without issue, but I'm concerned other problems will be created from this repair. I purchased certified pre-owned so I have a powertrain through Toyota for 7/100k so hopefully that will cover anything that may come up.

I asked my Toyota case manager to request only the master tech do the repairs. Seemed like she had done that before many times and happily agreed to communicate that request to the dealer. However, you never really know who touches it once it goes in.
