The rack itself is a bed stiffener. Just because the sides of the rack are angled, doesn't mean it spreads the bed out AT ALL. The rack is a rigid structure.

    Ditch those bed stiffeners permanently.

They would just be in my way, but they might offer a couple nice tie down points.

Are you sure? I have the long KBvoodoo rack on a short bed. The stock bolts that bolt near the tailgate don't feel very heavy duty or well attached, especially with the large gap between where the tonneau bracket comes down and the actual bedside. I was thinking of finding a nice metal plate to sandwich inbetween and fill the gap but haven't had the time yet. I can see this being the case for the short bed version but the way the long bed version mounts, maybe not

I wouldn't trust that bolt either, it's really small in diameter. I'm pretty sure it's only held on with a jack nut. If you could access that nut, you could drill it out and put in a larger bolt and nut from the other side. Assuming you could access it by removing the taillight.

That's sort of what I was thinking. I just totaled my truck and i'm in the process of getting my new one, I wanna take a closer look and see what I can do to reinforce that a little bit when it comes in. I might need a larger plate back there to spread the load.

So I removed the taillight assembly and you can definitely access the other side of that bolt location. So you could easily drill out that jacknut, put in a larger bolt, and put a nut on the other side if you wanted to.
