    Hey yall,

    Truck is a 2006 4.0 v6 4x4 with 82k miles. I bought it with 62k miles on it in 2016.

Long story short, released on holiday pass pre-deployment and my truck dies on the road. Traveling In the fast lane, A/T temp light, CEL, oil pressure light, and battery light all come on while my truck is losing speed, to a point where the motor dies at about 40mph. Pulled to the side of the road and try to research what happened. The truck would not fire while in park. I put into neutral and gave it gas to start it. The truck misfired/shuddered, metallic clicking/slapping sound, stalled and died unless continuous throttle was given. The truck would move forward and backwards but continued misfiring/stalling. All but the engine light would turn off after the truck was running.

This is 3 hours from home, but it was towed to a local toyota dealership, they didnt have time to put it in the shop/read codes/etc. Next day they give me a call telling me that the plugs looked like they were the originals(that they need changed every 30k miles) my change would of course came at 90k from my point of ownership. Course I should've had the truck tuned or at least checked. They say that they are covered in gas. Then tell me they need to do a compression test, and they'll let me know if my motor is blown.

Call comes in, they claim that cylinder 4 has no compression. Telling me my motor will cost 6-8k to replace and that they might be able to give me 800$-1k for the truck on trade. Later their sales member calls and tells me that they will give me 6k for the truck. Obviously a lot more than previous estimate.

Do any of yall have an idea of what happened, if the stealership is trying to pull a fast one?

well no compression does not mean the engine is bad, it just means something is causing the low compression. They should have also performed whats called a wet compression test to see if the piston rings are sealing. If needed they also could have performed a cylinder leak down test to check the cylinder head and valves. Its possible you just have a broken valve spring.

By them saying that a compression test will tell you if the engine is bad in itself does not give me much trust in them, now that may just be the service advisory dumbing it down for people. Contact them and asking if they performed both parts of the compression test, wet and dry, Ask for the pressure readings. If they are the same well that may lead you to believe the piston is good and there may be an issue with the head, a valve, the valve spring, the camshaft.
