Hello, I picked up a slightly used RCI rear bumper with back up lights installed. I got a great deal, but I may have messed up. On RCI's page is says,

"Allows the use of all factory electronics including trailer plug, backup sensors and license plate lights"

After looking at it, it seems clear that the BSM won't work, unless I fab up something pretty elaborate and cut holes in it. I guess I would consider BSM "electronics" but I'm guessing the web page for the bumper was a year or two before the BSM's were offered? Anyways, I'm looking for opinions. I would like to keep the BSM system fuctional. Should I:

    1. Sell the bumper and wait and buy a C4?
    2. Try and cut holes and fab up supports for the BSM?
    3. Trade the bumper for something else and just keep the back bumper stock?

    Thanks in advance.

    C4 hangs too low.

Fabbing would be hard without necessary tools and skill

RCI has a nice rear bumper...just forget the BSM and make better use of your mirrors.

I lost sonar and BSM when I jumped to my Mobtown bumper with swingout and don’t really miss either of the two options

I could figure it out and I have friends with the tools, just probably not the time to fab something up.

I guess I'm also worried about the sensors being really finicky about angle, and edges of the opening etc.

I guess the reason I don't want to forget the BSM or at least the Sonar is that I have small kids and want every safety feature available to keep them safe especially in the driveway.

Totally understandable. You can get the RAV4 mirrors with the bubble, direct fit into our taco, for better line of sight.

The sonar would do the work for you in a driveway scenario as the BSM is only working while the car is in drive

To my knowledge there are no options still to this day that keep the BSM working. The sonar parking sensors are not affected by metal but the BSM sensors seem to be. The only solution is to use a plastic bumper but that is of course the design criteria you are trying to eliminate.

That's true I suppose. I wonder if I would have warning lights or anything like that with the system disconnected?

You will not as long as the switch is off, 20,000 miles with less issues than when it was connected...

I guess I Could always install it and if I don’t like it, put it back. I got a heck of a deal on the bumper. And it seems like quite the improvement even if just for turning around on narrow back roads. Better exit angle and good protection.

    BSM works in reverse also.
C4 does make one that retains BSM: https://www.c4fabrication.com/produ...erland-series-rear-bumper-system-bsm-support/
