Wood Heat Thread ~ post pics

I have a pellet stove, I take the pipe down in the fall and pull a generic brush through it. Blow remaining ash and loose particles out of the pipe connecting stove and through the exterior wall.

 

Apologies for the thumb. I couldn't reshoot because one of them moved (of course!).

 

Has anyone else tried magic gas? I brought home the son in law's almost 40 year old Stihl 038 AV Super Pro figuring it would be a winter project to get running. It had always been a rotten starter (40 pulls min), hadn't run in the 10 years I've seen it siting in the barn.

Started with cleaning, case, air cleaner , bar etc. Checked for spark in the dark...present. From watching all the videos the next fun step is putting a thimble full down the plug hole...fired right up. Hmm, promising. A thimble full down the carb throat, 2 pulls and it runs itself out. More promising. No gas in the tank (starting problems?), so I flushed it with the $11/litre ($50/gallon) Husky premix that I bought with my new Husky 365 last week (for the 2 more years warranty), half filled the tank and hoped for the best. 4 pulls and it ran nicely. Hmm. Ran until I shut it off. More starts after cooling off with 1 or 2 pulls to get going. Wow! As good as my brand new Husky.

Worth sharpening now. Did so and put it into some wood. Quite a saw. I've never run a Stihl before, lots of low end torque it seems. Running it in some real bucking will be the test, that and putting regular mixed gas through it. The Husky premium is just too rich for my blood.

Expecting to have to rebuild the carb, check all the compression leakage spots I've heard about, then the surprising results made me call it Magic Gas.

I use gas, from the pump, premium without alcohol.

 

I used to use those canned gas all the time but they’re so expensive that now I only use them to winterize my equipment. They do seem to run nicely on it though. I’ve had a few things that ran like crap, so I filled them with that stuff and it seemed to make a difference.

I also got a warranty extension on red max stuff for buying some, so that was cool.

When I mix gas, I use premium, and ethanol free when I can find it. And I use amsoil saber oil to mix in it. It can be mixed up to a 80 or 90:1 ratio and still lubricates thoroughly. (Says something along those lines on the package) so I never really worry about how much gas or how much oil is in the mixture.

 

Been getting after the firewood the last few days. Hardly put a dent in it. Good problem to have. Mostly red oak, poplar, ash, cherry, with a little bit of elm, maple, and a few others thrown in for good measure. Definitely will stay busy on days off this winter.

I've tried gas in the can from the home center. Expensive, but my saw ran great! But it was really expensive.

Using 100% gas, 90+ octane, and Stihl mix has been working great for me. My saw is about 20 years old, and doesn't get run very often.

I use my Dremel to sharpen my chain, and it cuts very well.

 

Looked for it. It might be available in Asheville at Maddens Ace Hardware. Gonna look next time I go to the big city.

 

We had the strongest windstorm I've ever seen here on Thursday , 128-144kph winds , power was out to over 500,000 people on the BC south coast , lots of people I know will be out for at least another week , we got lucky at our house and got power back on Sat .

There are literally thousands of trees down in the area I live in , going to be a ton of firewood to cut coming up here .

I can't speak to 40 year-old Stihls but every Stihl 2-stroke I own is harder than it should be to start. I also had one that essentially refused to start with the factory air cleaner installed; I cut a piece of foam rubber to replace it, soaked it in some oil, fires up now like all my other Stihl motors. Which is to say:

0: Never never ever ever touch the priming bulb.
1. Open throttle all the way and lock it.
2. Set the choke to max.
3. Pull a couple of times (or so) until it stutters.
4. Open the choke (a.k.a. normal running position); leave throttle wide open.
5. Pull a couple more times (or so).
6. Success!

 

Glad things worked out for you. We have the wood stove and backup generator to power the well pump. Mother Nature has a way of quickly making you realize how good we have it. Stay safe and enjoy the new year.

 

The only time either of my Husky's take more than 3 pulls to start is when I've forgotten to switch them back to 'run' It's always 'choke, pull 1-2 times, push the choke in, pull again' and it fires up

 

I have been burning crazy amounts of wood in my old "r.I challenger" stove that came with house... just ordered a pe t6...being delivered 20th-21st..
