People were saying the Tacoma was outdated even for 2nd gens back in 2012 right after their minor update and addition of touch screens.

Fact of the matter is, if you want cutting edge interior updates then poney up for a bells and whistles American/Euro manufacturer model, and buy a new one year after year.

The whole “outdated” statement is blanket generalization when people tend to compare “average” interiors to the cutting edge or luxury design models. Comparing a Tacoma to something like a Tesla, Mercedes, top of the line Lexus is apples to oranges now matter how hard you force it down someone’s throat.

In 2016 every car journalist and blog owner wrote articles pitting the new Tacoma against the new Colorado. A few of them remembered to include the poor Frontier in their reindeer games as well.

They were damn near unanimous, picking the Chevy as the class leader in power, drivability, and comfort. A few went so far as to tout the incredible interior of the Chevy. Curious, for I had already made my purchase scant months before Coloradomania swept the country, I snuck onto a showroom floor and sat in a Z71.

I despised it. Cheap untextured polyethylene on every surface. People love to howl about body panel gaps, but how often do you see dashboard panel gaps? If it weren't for the school-bus upright seats, I would have thought I was sitting in a 1995 Cavalier.

if I were to tally up the time whenever my vehicle sits in my line of sight, 95% will be from the POV of looking through the front glass. A finished, purposeful interior and a "blind" user interface that I can operate without laying eyeballs on the controls are two very important features. In that category the taco reigns supreme over the Chevy and Nissan rivals. Would power seats, heated shift levers, and cheek massagers be better? Certainly yes, there is room for improvement. A lot of room. But for all the taco lacks, there is a whole lot more that it gets right.

While trying to sneak back out of that same showroom, a friendly sales agent forced my eye contact. He asked if I was ready to take it for a quick spin around the block. "No thanks," I said, "I already saw all that I need to."

Other than no power seats on the 3rd Generation Tacoma, the interior is relatively nice. I'm comfortable in my 2nd gen interior, everything is analog, and I don't even have an AUX plug. The less computerized, the nicer the interior is IMO.

Outdated is seeing the same interior in ANY make/model, year after year after year... I blame the generational refresh of current auto builds vs the old days of every year refresh (when competition was driving engineering).

I like things kind of "stark" myself. Think 1977 CJ-5 but with a 5 speed manual.

There are a few things I wish the Tacoma cane with. Apple car play, heated steering wheel, and my biggest gripe auto wipers. Other than that it’s perfect.

GM trucks have been in a serious slump for the last few decades as far as interior design is concerned... the Colorado/Canyon front door panels are completely useless... I have no idea what the point of having tiny unusable pockets are, no value what so ever. Same issue with the QI charger in the GM... my phone won’t fit, so what’s the rational of the small charging cubby? IMO, Toyota definitely beats GM with interior useability and design.

lol, have you met my wife... single climate control on the GM variants was another NO GO for the Canyon and a plus for the Tacoma

The interior update was exactly why I traded in my 2nd Gen.
Other than the radio interface voice commands being dumber than a box of rocks...:help:

So 3 years of a Taco and it’s outdated? Other automakers may have been at a point in the past where their interiors were constantly updated but Toyota has never been this way. They have a comfortable business model of updating generationally because it speaks well to their wallet and I can’t blame them for that. Especially when they see year after year steady sales in the vehicles in question.

    My 17 Silverado had:
Apple car play, miss that a little but not that much.
Heated seats, never saw a Tacoma with them myself, really miss!
Remote start including a phone app that controlled everything, kinda miss this.
Power seats, ok without but they were nice.

My Chevy was just a regular Z71 All Star package and was the same price as my new Tacoma.

All that being said I love my Tacoma and wouldn’t go back.
