A lot of people forget there's thousands of Tacoma owners that are not on forums falling victim to herd mentality.

To answer the question on towing for all. I anticipated towing a lot more than I actually have. I have used the bed a lot. I live on land out in the country and have a small hobby farm. Right now the only thing I would possible tow is my compact tractor but that could be remedied by using my wife's Sequoia. I wanted a diesel also for long term ownership. My work pays for my miles I drive so the extra cost was not an issue. The last auto I owned I had for 11 years. I am very diligent about maintenance. Overall my payment is not a problem as I paid a large percentage in cash but understand I would surely take a hit on the little bit of depreciation.

Thanks again all for the perspective on this. Your input is extremely valuable. :)

In 2013 I traded in my 2010 Ram 2500 Laramie for a 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport. A few months later I began regretting my decision. Mostly I missed the Cummins and of course the full size. Tacoma was too cramped, with a weird driver seating position (I'm 6'4"). I ended up keeping the Tacoma 11 months and got a leftover new 2013 Ram 2500 Laramie. Now I'm, driving a 2016 F150 Platinum, which is nice, but once again, jonesin' for a HD.

I would not recommend anyone trading in a full size for a Tacoma.

Based on your anticipated towing the Tacoma should do what you need. Depending on the size of your CUT (or SCUT) I would say it is still capable to pull this with lots of room to spare. My Kubota B1750 is no issue.

Now since you claim lots of moderate distance driving I would suggest doing a substantial test drive including highway and using cruise control. That is the only time I have issues with my Tacoma (other than towing). It tends to shift down easily but sometimes won’t shift back to 6th gear which seems to be compounded when using cruise.

Go look at the Ram 1500s. Tons of killer incentives right now and the interior is redesigned and fresh. Drives silky smooth and plenty of space in the rear seats.

I say have one of each. I live in California and they just added a $.20 thx for Diesel Fuel. Any mileage benefit I did get went out the window with that so my Ram 3500 Mega Cab has been reduced to a tow vehicle. I average about 25 trips a year where I tow - trailer or large boat.

But mostly I agree that it depends on what you use the truck for....

I would never consider towing with anything other than a Full Size w/diesel. But I tow regularly. I’ve tried half tons of every shape and size and they just lack the girth or the power to tow anything of reasonable size. I’m not sure why anybody would want a full size over a Taco if the truck is a legit work or toy hauler.

My other vehicle was an LC100. Safe, fun, but a gas guzzler and too underpowered to tow. Just sold it so that has put me back in the market for a Taco. To me the Tacoma reminds me of the original utility of the pickups (60’s C-10 Stepside) my Grandfather drove. Easy to use for daily driving. Not too big that you have to park a mile away from everything and won’t break the bank in cost.

I can 100% agree with you on the interstate doing 70 issue and 6th gear being seen very very slim! However I still love my Tacoma because of the Size and looks and Toyota reliability Plus they hold their resale value better than just about anything else out there. All that said if the new Ranger Raptor looked as mean as the F150 I would highly consider that if I was buying a new vehicle. I think the hood/rake of the front end looks pretty bad.

If I had the F250 I personally would not trade for the Tacoma, the F250 is rated one of the most reliable trucks at the moment so you would not gain anything there. Sounds like you got a good deal on it so the resale benefit is a wash. To me that is the only 2 things you gain and you don’t need them. I went from a 2500HD Ram to the Tacoma and while the Tacoma isn’t bad, I miss the HD truck all the time. I traded for resale and reliability. I think with the quirky drivability that the Tacoma is better bought used with high mileage, that’s where they shine for your money. New..there are a lot of other trucks I would rather spend 35-45K on.

I think they are a great used truck value, new..not as much. I would keep the F250. Maybe pick up a older Tacoma for the trails etc.

Eww if the OP wants a domestic half ton GM or Ford have the answer.

The RAMs are junk. I was offered a new RAM and once around the block was all it took. I told them to give it to the green horn. The interior quality is shit.

Two completely different vehicles... that’s like trading a smart car for a motorcycle, two different purpose built conveyances. Buy what you want for identified rational reasons...

Trading a F250 for a brand new 3rd gen Tacoma?

Yep. It might be Christmas eve, but we are going to have to rush you to the mental hospital to get you checked out. Stat.

If your F250 can be replaced by a Tacoma, then I know one thing - you have no use for the F250.

Either you didn't need a 3/4 ton or a Tacoma isn't going to cut it for you. No where near the same hauling and towing capability.

    A couple things
I just did. The lack of rear seat space, combined with the shifting got to where I said screw it, I’m done.

I still miss a few things the Tacoma did very well, but overall I’m very glad I did it.

I’ve had 2 power strokes, 3 duramax, 3 Cummins, and 2 tacos. I will never go back to a 3/4 ton. No need to hual that much weight anymore. The taco is a better dd. Easier to park, better mileage, cheaper maintence, cheaper insurance, cheaper registration, no emissions bullshit like the new diesels.

Now if I towed over 10k weekly then sure. Diesels are more money pits then tacos. Deleting, tuning, trans upgrades, injectors, fuel pumps, it’s never ending. You think modding tacos is expensive get into the diesel game.

At the end of the day you gotta figure out what ya want the truck for. If you want a super reliable small truck get a taco. If you want a truck they can hual anything stay in the f250.

The F250 and the Taco are like. Comparing apples and cheese burger...

I agree if you are thinking about trading your F250 for a Taco you never needed an F250...

Either way welcome to the forum.
