Will bear spray stop a charging bear or at that point are you basically fucked?

Mountain biking in BC you see lots of black bears, any healthy bear doesn't want anything to do with you 99.9 percent of the time ( made up stat)
Have never seen a grizz in the wild here yet, be really cool to see one through the binos!

Oh my God, could you imagine being this gal’s husband when you do something she doesn’t like. (Insert horrible nail scratchy voice) “Please Stop that dear!”

Here's how to tell the difference between Black bear and Grizzly shit. Black bear shit has berry seeds and small stems. Grizzly shit has hiking bells and smells of pepper.

    ^this^

I worked for 4 seasons on a survey crew, laying out logging roads in the area around Yellowstone Park. Basically 40 hrs/week in the woods in areas with lots of bear sign, and never once saw a bear. We made a lot of noise while doing the survey work, calling the measurements back to the recorder. And, since there was no trail, when we hiked to and from the survey line it was impossible to move quickly or quietly.

So will bear spray work, couldn't say. But it seems to me if you need it you've already done something wrong.

To put things in perspective, I’ve flown alongside a full grown grizzly boar that was running at a full sprint and kept pace at 35kts. That 800lb bear will close the gap between the max range of your bear spray and your face in about .5 seconds.

Exactly. I ride mtn bikes and we have a lot of bear around here. Every bear we have seen while riding is going away from us. Make noise. Lots of noise and animals will leave you alone.

make noise, keep a clean camp, be aware of your surroundings. Most bears don't want anything to do with people and will avoid us at all costs. If a bear is charging you then you screwed up. Bear spray is your last resort for surprise attacks, only good within about 30 feet. As long as you spray it in the bears face it should do the trick. Scream, stomp your feet, raise your jacket/backpack to look big and intimidating. Whatever you can do to make the bear think you're scarier than you are.

a 12 gauge isn't going to stop a bear, only going to piss it off even more

    Welp.

Edit: I'm sure a nice, clean headshot will take care of the problem. I wouldn't kill a bear unless it's charging at me.

Same. Don’t hunt anymore, too many deployments to enjoy it.

Chances are your not going to get that gun out before the bear is on you. Most attacks happen when you surprise the bear. If he knows your there he will make a get away.

All you need is a couple good days to fill the freezer for the year up here. The only meat I buy is pork and sometimes chicken if I haven’t shot any grouse in a while.
