RF in my Yaesu 857 D Amature Radio

I am having very bad RF noise when the engine is running. it gets worse when I press the gas peddle or the cruise control call for more speed.

 

How did you wire the radio? It should be direct wired to the battery. Also, is the noise on TX or RX? Any specific band or all of them? Where do the wires run including the antenna? All of these can lead to noise pickup.

Wired straight to battery and wires are run thru rubber where wire harness is run. The radio power leads are then run under the driver door door plate then to radio mounted under driver seat. The antenna is mounted in the bed using the tie down bracket screws on driver side. The coax is run between the bed and cab of truck and run thru a rubber plug into rear passenger door in the raceway under door plastic strip. I also have a heavy ground strap bonding the antenna mount to the frame. My problem is worse on 20 & 80 meters. I have installed ferrite beads and chokes on every wire entering the radio and and remote head, this has helped some.

 

Seems like you did everything right. How's the coax? Got decent SWR? The tie down rails are a poor place to mount and with the ground strap, you should be ok on an electrical ground but not RF ground. Problem is there aren't many mounting options on an HF antenna. Sorry I'm not anymore help. Try the other thread and maybe someone may have more knowledge. I know a fellow ham that is a noise specialist. If I talk to him tomorrow on the repeater, I'll ask him.

Sub'd for a solution. I use an IC7000 and a 20m hamstick mounted on top of my camper shell. Connected directly to battery. Grounding and ground plane are great, i have a 3.5x5 foot rhino liner basket on roof. I also tried running 4 counterpoise radials around the basket. Transmits like gangbusters. RX RFI is horrible. 10 over 9 hash when engine is running. Seems to me that it is EFI related.

 

It's your alternator. Make sure your antenna is grounded and add a filter to the power supply just before your equipment.

 

Antenna and rig grounded to the frame. I've run the radio off a separate battery from the truck, still have the RFI.
