Thats a huge misconception, being that they can still hide money on the trade. Let's say you have a trade that the dealership appraised at 10k, they can come back and tell you that it's worth 8k thus making 2k off of you. Dealerships seldomly show the customer the actual appraisal that was done, they just come back with a number.

The best thing to do is to leave the trade out of it all together and sell it yourself, but if you don't feel like doing that then do as much research as possible and have an idea of what a realistic trade in value would be as well as knowing what you want to pay for the truck then you can work the dealership or dealerships based on trade difference.

At the end if the day the less variables there are the less headaches you will get, but throwing in the trade at the last minutes gives the dealership another opportunity to make money off of you.

This is an excellent point as well, what you save on finance charges on a new one could easily pay the difference in price between new versus used.

I would agree that less variables is the way to go. Sell on your own if possible.
As far as a huge misconception I don’t agree. You need to know what your trade in value is. Do your homework, all the info is available online.

    Edit
Also remember that trade in moneys are just like cash down, in that it reduces the taxable amount. So there is some “hidden” money on the buyers end.

I sold cars back in the day and I was very good at it. I stopped because I wanted to be able to sleep at night.

I can't tell you how many times I had customers offering invoice pricing on a Honda accord to then through in a trade at the last minute and I can't tell you how many times that sale went from what we would call a "mini deal" to an actual commissionable sale after they decided to through in their trade at the last minute.

But yeah, doing your research is very important especially when it comes to trade ins, the sad part is that as we approach 2019, with the plethora of information available online, many consumers simply don't bother to take the time.

Agreed. I did the same deal. Same truck, tax, tag, license etc for 35k flat .And no trade in....sometimes they make it back there but this was just a straight deal. And before we agreed at 35,they offered it at 35300. He asked, "are you really gonna let this deal go for $300?". My response "are you?". I'm a business owner and negotiate frequently. 35k was my price, nothing over. That's how you make deals, no emotions . That said,I also agree that the 2016 has been the originla launch vehicle of the 3rd gen, wouldn't be my pick. I lucked out with buying in 2017 because I wouldn't want TSS either. But it would be hard to argue saving 4 grand over a loan for a brand new product. I did the same with mywifes 4R and this truck. Both bought new. Good luck OP.

I always negotiate final price of vehicle before showing my trade. I have my trade appraised prior to visiting the dealership I want to buy and I pretty much tell them what they are going to give me on the trade. That is the best way I have found to make sure all the numbers add up the way they are supposed to as well as getting the dealership down as far as possible on the vehicle I want to buy.

I also tell them if they mention payment more than once before I get an out the door price, I will be walking out the door. I do live in an area that has multiple dealerships so it’s not hard to throw one deal out and get it at another. If you have limited choices that can be difficult.

I agree this is a business transaction and your job is to get the best deal, as is the dealer and never be afraid to walk away. I usually do it at least once in the conversation so I can look at things objectively and they know I am willing to leave at any point.

The dealership has my old 2015 30k miles and very good condition on their lot now. $30,999. They have a sticker that says "was 33,999", but they just got the truck this past Thursday. It will include a lifetime powertrain warranty. But then again it is a toyota.
