So according to this "leak" so to speak, the next gen tundra will get 30 mpg (highway, i'm guessing). As to how it will achieve that, there are tons of speculation.

Reason i'm putting it in this thread, if that's the case what do you think is going to happen with the tacoma? I mean if that ends up happening, the only thing the tacoma will have going for it is its size. Tundra would obviously have more capability and then better mpg, and I'm sure lots of people who have owned tundras have gone to the tacoma for better mpg.

That's not going to happen. Tundra or Tacoma. Anytime soon. I'm sorry to say...

I’m sure Toyota’s full size will get better MPG than it’s midsize brother. This sounds plausible.

The Tacoma checks a bunch of boxes that the Tundra never will, even if it could achieve better fuel economy, IMHO.

The TRD OR edition of the Tundra is weak as balls compared to what is in my Tacoma OR. Still no stock rear locker, even on the Tundra TRD Pro? Come on, that's lame.

There are myriad other reasons, but these jump out at me quickly.

The Tundra has it's place, but so does the Tacoma, gas mileage aside.

Unless Toyota comes up with either A) Some new "trick" like auto stop or B) A revolutionary engine design that magically gives the engine 50% more efficiency or C) They build the truck out of aluminum and carbon fiber to lighten it up considerably then you will only see a small incremental efficiency change in the mpg department.

Look, I know it's easy to fall for marketing hype. Believe it or not I fall for it sometimes too. But let's talk facts: A vehicle with a given weight accelerating and maintaining a given speed being propelled by an internal combustion engine of current design is only going to give you a certain mpg. It's simple physics.
Now, you can do tricks like aerodynamics, supercharger, turbo, start/stop, different compound tires, aluminum construction to lighten it up, shuttered grille and such and that is going to give you one or two mpg max. Not increase it by 50%! It's simply impossible using current technology.

Now, if they make the Tundra a hybrid turbo diesel over electric, they built it out of aluminum and they made it look like a Honda Ridgeline, then they can get 30 mpg.

Or, they can play the bait and switch game other manufacturers play and give you a single cab, two wheel drive no option stripper Tundra 4 cylinder hybrid (when you really want a 4WD crew cab loaded Tundra) that gets 30 mpg on flat ground at 55 mph at sea level.

Otherwise, it's all bullshit by a guy hawking his screen name to save you a bit of money and advertise his youtube channel.

    It's simply physics.

Diesel and mild hybrid will get 30 mpg...but it won't happen

Not interested. I don't need that much truck. If MPG were an issue I wouldn't own any truck as I could just rent or borrow one when I need it.

Definitely this. There are only a few ways you could get 30mpg.

    1) violate the laws of physics.
    2) diesel
    3) hybrid drivetrain getting super high in town fuel economy. This would only help 5-10% hwy.

Ok. That dude that made the video is crazy. He completely lost me when he started speaking hydrogen. That's not going to happen. Hydrogen technology for a car is a dead end for multiple reasons not the least of which is complexity, efficiency, hydrogen availability etc. The only reason that a car mfg would make a hydrogen vehicle is for government credits and would be sold to very specific buyers that can deal with the issues.

30 mpg in a truck is definitely possible and likely in the next few years with the introduction of hybrid trucks (I forget dates, but Ford 2020?, Chevy 2020 or 21?). Toyota has got to be working on this too with their extensive hybrid experience. Heck, even small diesels can come close. But as was said earlier, that will be for a base 2wd model, not a TRD OR or Sport, anything with leather, etc. On the most popular trims, I would think around 22 mpg combined and 26-28 highway may be more realistic (and I still feel like I'm reaching a bit)

That said, I do not doubt that the next Tundra will be better than the Taco when it finally comes out. Remember when the current gen Tundra came out? It was arguably the best truck in the segment at the time. I wouldn't doubt it if Toyota did this again (and with their refresh/redesign schedule compared to the big 3, be completely outdated 2 years later)

There's already a full size truck out there that's rated at 30 mpg. F150 diesel 4x2 has that rating. There is no reason why Toyota won't be able to achieve that rating after 14 year product cycle. I can't see hydrogen, but pretty sure it will be a hybrid of some sort. When 2007 Tundra came out it was the most advanced truck in the segment. 2021 will likely be the same as they probably won't have an all new one until 2035 again. :frusty:
