My 2017 developed a rear end whine. Pinion Brg was bad. 3rd member replaced at 10,000. Still had a whine on decelerations. At 15,000 dealer just did cab tsb. 50 % better but not a cure. Just a reducer. Their solution is the springs. Again just a cover up. Thinking of replacing with Lucas gear oil. Next move for me would be to try another gear set. Not spending more money because Toyota can’t assemble Quality parts. Most inquiries are manual Transmission 4wd. So decided to start this one.

Mine had the hum/whine at about 60 mph. Did the cab silencer tsb and new leafs in the back.
The noise was reduced, but was definitely still there.

That’s basically where I am, just did the cab, they said next springs. But it’s a just to try to reduce the sound. I had two Nissans each 300,000 miles and no noise. I understand mine is a crush sleeve adjustment so really only pinion nut is the adjuster. It’s only noisy on the slack side of the gear. Not getting worse, but not going away.

Do you know what role the crush sleeve plays?

This is a common issue unfortunatly, I'm guessing you have a manual trans.

Edit: The mother thread of diff howl.

Mine is a 2wd automatic. All I could find on internet was 4wd and manual trans. Crush sleeve sets end play in gear set.

End play is the side to side movement of the carrier. Crush Sleeve sets pinion bearing preload.

Disguising the noise is not a fix. I test and evaluate vehicles. I am not going accept this TSB as a cure. The next exchange might be worse however. So much for Toyota Quality.

Just found Sunday. While backing up for a short distance, I Hearing gear clunk sound. Sounds like chipped tooth actually. I wonder what the next excuse will be, contacting dealer.

I've had the torque converter clunk which is unfortunately "normal", could that be what you are hearing?

No, it’s definitely coming from the rear end. I really like the truck, but do not like the clicking of the injector pump and now the rear end. I am used to driving with out sound on.
