    Hello, I'm Casey.

I just picked up a D3300 as my first DSLR camera. My main purpose in picking one up is to take better pictures of my products. Small products like patches, stickers, flashlights, and so on. I'm wondering what the best ring light setup to pick up would be to get proper even lighting over these small products. Or is there something else you'd recommend for lighting?

Amazon has some great table top kits that are inexpensive that have a photo box with them. Diffused light and a tripod for your camera are going to be your best friend with that type of photography.

Here's an example from Amazon, but do your own search and decide what suites your needs the best.

I also wanting a wood background to take these on, curious if buying a wood printed backdrop would be the solution or to buy a square foot of rustic wood would be better?

Im partial toward strobes, and have had a great experience with Alien Beez 800’s. Couple of softboxes go a long way.

I'm a noob to photography. Are soft boxes the white boxes he posted a link to?

Btw if all you plan on doing are small objects, that little seamless setup will work fine, but if you ever get an inkling to go bigger, and want to do more, you’ll find yourself looking at strobes and gear that will let you light larger objects. All depends on what your interest is. Grats on the new Nikon btw! Get some good glass, a macro lens preferably. I’d
    recommend the 60mm 2.8 macro.

Ah! Wonderful. I'm learning, haha. I just started watching these videos my secret santa gave to me, FroKnowsPhoto. Trying my best to learn quickly.

Thank you much. I bought it 50% for taking better product photos, and 50% because it's a hobby I seriously want to get into. The kit I bought came with a VR 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. I'd like to practice taking pictures of my truck, as well as the products on my truck. I assume I'll need to buy a UV filter, because I keep reading about them.

Those kit lenses are surprisingly aright haha. They’re a little slow, but will do a decent job.

Get some faster glass (2.8, 1.8) to also get a creamy background for your product shots. Sigma makes a pretty decent 3rd party lens, go to a shop and check them out.

Will do! I'm going to start with these before I dump anymore money. Haha. It added up quick! I'm already at $500 for something I'm not even sure I'll 100% I'll stick with.:rofl:

You’re not doing half bad man.... wait till you demo a 70-200 2.8, and get home wondering why you just spent $2500 on some plastic and glass.

Then you take it out and remember why.

Yeah, that worries me. I already have a Tacoma addiction, an R/C addiction. I'm not sure my girlfriend can handle another :rofl:

Luckily, just a brushless Traxxas Slash, and my wife has a Rustler with a Castle brushless and ESC.

Things were looking to get out of hand, so we made an oath to not upgrade anything that wasn't broken. How about you?

Ohhh man. Haha. I sold my brushless slash. Now I have a Team associated PROSC4x4, a fully modified Axial Wraith, Traxxas TRX4 for a trail rig, an XRAY T2 touring, and my girlfriend has an Axial Bomber that's got a few vanquish parts. Don't get into crawling, haha. It'll take every dime you have.

Well, it's addictive, like my personality. So photography may turn out the same for me. Lol

Just go all in now, get a 2 light strobe setup, 1600 watts, so you can shoot under the sun, and expose to your lighting, and a 24 - 70 2.8. /thread
