Today I was on the freeway and was passed by a lifted GMC pickup. Suddenly, white smoke started pouring out of his truck (enough to obscure my view). The cloud of smoke got bigger and I drove into a whiteout and successfully steered to the shoulder (or so I thought).

Next thing I knew, there was a giant impact. I was hit from behind by someone else who also could not see.

As you can see from there photos, the Ford that hit me is FUBRed. I am not sure of my damage, although I was able to drive away without injury to me. The box seems wonky to me, especially since the cap no longer seems to fit.

The bumper is long gone and the box was pushed forward enough to dent the cab corner. In a few days I will have my body shop do a thorough review of the damage.

A passenger in the car was being taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but I am fine. Turns out the GMC blew a radiator hose, hence the white smoke.

I will keep you all posted.

    Did the smoker stick around?

He was broken down about a quarter mile ahead. Truthfully, no one was at fault. Just one of those things. When you hear someone describing driving into a wall of fog or snow... that's what this was like. Pretty scary, but it could have been worse.

Start shopping for a new truck, if the box hit the cab corner it's done

Frame bent, truck will be close to total if totaled considering having to replace frame.

I was hit in the rear by a Hyundai Santa Fe a few years ago in my '06 DCSB... it chipped the plastic cover over the step on the bumper and put 2 very small dents in my tailgate. I never bothered to have it fixed. The hood on the Hyundai broke the windsheild... I'm sure it was totalled.

Yep... these trucks are pretty tough...

These trucks show up as rebuilders all the time at a local place. They all seem to have one thing in common rear ended and box smacked the cab. Someone of them have even less damage than yours. I'd be impressed if they fixed it.

If it gets totaled out, I would try to buy it back cheap, fix it, and have some $$$ left over.

It's likely not worth it. The back frame rails are likely bent to shit and if the OP has a bed rug or mat he should lift it up and look. I've looked at enough builders a few years ago to find that the box will look ok only to find the floor is cracked.

When you rear end someone... you are at fault LOL.

My assumption is the truck is totalled.

I hope things work out as best as they can. Glad you weren't hurt.

This sucks on many levels, glad your okay. The smoking rig is the root cause, the tailgater is at fault for hitting you. Hope it can be fixed and you don’t take to much of a money hit.

Got a fresh look at it in the daylight. The bumper is rolled up under the box. No cracks in the composite bed that I can initially see. Yes, the front of the bed made a hard enough kiss on the cab corner to leave a fist-sized dent, but the bed seems to have sprung back into place. The rear frame rails look bad where the bumper attaches, but otherwise the frame has no obvious issues. The fiberglass cap seems tweaked, however.

So, by my eyes, it will need bed sides, a tailgate, taillights, bumper and body work on the cab corner at the least. Maybe a replacement cap. And the ABS/stability control lights came on after the crash.

    I doubt it's a total unless there are frame issues. It's a 2014 with under 60K miles.

Ouch, glad you're ok. That Ford certainly didn't stand a chance, though. Oof.

UPDATE. Talked to the claims adjustor today. One of my concerns is the the fiberglass cap was damaged when it made contact with the cab. He assured me they want to restore my truck to pre-collision condition. The truck is at the body shop getting an estimate. Their estimator told me they don't try to repair caps and they will estimate its replacement.

Currently, they are looking closely at the frame to assure there is no damage from the collision. I've decided I will not accept a "pulled" frame, if it comes to that.

But honestly, I looked a long time for this truck and will be very disappointed if it is totaled.
