Suggestions on hazed headllight lenses, please.
I have rubbing compound but no buffer. Somebody mentioned at work to use toothpaste, scrub it on and buff out with a soft cloth when dried. As far as the rubbing compound goes a person mentioned lightly sanding it before using rubbing compound the lightest sandpaper I have is 400 grit and no buffer :help:

Just apply the rubbing compound and buff it out with a cloth when it dries. Usually that gives a pretty good improvement.

Sure, you cannot do it today, but it's cheaper than a buffer.

400 grit is way too aggressive for buffing / polishing. If you wet sand, you’ll need to reapply clear coat and you’d need something more along the lines of 800 grit+.
There’s enough to polish your headlights. That stuff should work fine but i’d Recommend some sort of mechanical means for polishing, doing it by hand will wear you out quick. Also, it’s easier if you take them off the truck first or at least tape off the surrounding area with masking tape. You can get a cheap buffing wheel for a drill at most auto stores, they work well enough.

X2. When I was restoring headlights I started out at 800 grit, then moved to 1500 grit, then to 2500 grit, then plastic polish for the finish. Then cleaned them off and put on a coat of the Meguair's headlight coating. 400 is way too aggressive; you'll spend more time smoothing out the lines from the 400 than you will actually polishing the lights, lol.

Rubbing and polishing compounds do have a little bit of abrasive to them. Rubbing compound is more aggressive than polishing compound.
Mike is right. 400 grit is WAY too aggressive to use for finishing.

If you want them like new you can use 1000 grit then 1500 or 2000 grit. Follow that with your rubbing compound and finally a polish and your headlights will be like brandy spanking new! Finally dont forget to seal them with some type of UV protection (wax, etc).

Just so you know each application should only take a minute or two so it's a pretty quick process.

These are the type of lights Pugga asked
that I have Ok one is obviously good
I had the toothpaste it on the other to dry and used-soft cloth and water and elbowgreased ,it slightly improved
That being said I will use the two stage sanding with high grit content and a buffer.
But to clarify, i will be whet sanding?
