Random question, anyone have any experience with an MP5 clone? Thinking of looking into a PTR, but not sure if they are really worth it with the mixed reviews. I think TPM outfitters could be a solid purchase, but its almost double in price.

Did not see this topic anywhere so I'm asking here: Looking for a good GPS that has off-road trails (the more complete the better). Looking for something with a 5 or 7 inch screen that can be securely mounted in the Tacoma and NOT cell phone based as I see these fail more often than not out where you really need a map. I see reviews for the Magellan TR7 and TRX7 are mixed, also looked online at Trail Tech GPS units which appear to be for dirt bikes/Adventure bikes. Willing to pay $400 for something good. This cell phone falling on the floor and timing out BS is over.

Anyone have experience with this stuff?

Call Camelback Toyota, they should have them in stock.

Most of the things rated for dirt/adv bikes are good stuff... but it comes with the bigger price tag. One of the tricks is to look for "snowmobile" equipment and gear. Same shit, but cheaper. If it is designed to be exposed to dirt, dust, snow, etc.... it will take the beating inside your vehicle.

I have used several different GPS units over the years, a lot of it comes down to preference. For the larger screen, your entry price is $400. Expect to pay closer to $600, but usually those will last you for every.

I had the TRX7.. I wasnt a fan. The UI was clunky vs Garmin and the unit itself was nothing more than a loaded tablet. I even searched some known trails and it didnt have all of them. and to find the ones on there.. it was clunky and just didnt make it user friendly. It was almost easier to plan your trip on the pc and send it to the gps rather than using the gps itself.

I switched to the newer Garmin drivetrack.

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/pn/010-01696-00

allows for dog tracking and Satellite imagery (my biggest desire and gripe with some units). I use imagery and landmarks more than anything. I have the AZ map as well. it may not show a trail name, as a lot of the trails we travel are too small half the time anyways.. so I can at least see a visual representation of it. I went through a few units before finally settling on this Garmin. no complaints and when loaded with imagery (i downloaded the imagery prior to our utah/colorado trip and had it the whole way) it pretty much fits my needs perfectly.

I have a handheld I recently bought that is the cat's meow. Screen too small for your specs but I find it quite handy since I don't drive around looking at the GPS but just pull it out and check it now and then. I use it mainly for hiking and climbing.

    https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/550460

I loaded it with maps downloaded free of charge from here. The AZ map is pretty up to date and has great detail, down to 1:24k scale.

    https://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

If that works for you, great. If not here is something else that works almost perfectly:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-earth-gpx-kml-and-more.553715/#post-18028093

Skip the first part about setting up tracks and trails and all that and go down to where it talks about setting the tablet up for GPS. Hopefully my link took you directly there.

I inherited my mom's android tablet when she died. It never had any phone service connected to it but it has WiFi and built in GPS which almost all of them do nowadays. I was glad to finally have a use for it and downloaded the BackCountry Navigator App and set it up as he describes there and it works almost perfectly. What's not perfect is I get a lot of reflection off the screen and have to manually reset it to outdoor brightness mode on the display every time I turn it off and back on.

You can load it with imagery, topo, road maps, etc, from the DB available through the app. All free.

Only thing left for me to do is find a way to mount it.... I want a mount I can move back-and-forth between my Jeep (main offroad vehicle) and the Taco (sometimes hunting vehicle).

Anyway, I hope that works for you.

I've kinda struggled with this as well especially after dropping $450 on a Garmin InReach for my backpacking/hiking safety. We've got like 3 old tablets lying around the house going to re purpose one of those as a dedicated GPS mapping device for the truck and just find a mount for it. That way it gives me a bigger screen to utilize a service like GAIA maps etc.

Using my phone right now paired with a BadElf GPS receiver - no complaints. I plan on buying an IPad to pair with the BadElf. At least for me I think there is way more utility in having a tablet than a sole dedicated GPS mapper. If I was going to go with a mapper I’d look at some of the Lowrance models.

ARGH insurance license expires this year, that means 48 hours of CE in the next couple months to renew.

One of my SBR's is an MP5 clone made by Vector Arms.

When it comes to MP5 clones, what you want is something that's made from an actual HK parts kit. My Vector is all HK parts aside from the stamped receiver. So while it is a clone and does not bear the official stamp of "because you suck and we hate you", everything that matters is genuine.

I had the opportunity to put a registered auto pack in it at a machine gun shoot one time, we did the swap and it ran like a sewing machine with no issues.

PTR, last I remember, does not source HK barrels or bolts. Barrel isn't as big of an issue, but I know the bolts are different. I am pretty sure their bolts are welded to prevent being a host for a registered pack.

Not shitting on PTR as a whole though, I have a pretty extensively modified PTR91 GI that is a blast. I do hear that they are hit or miss on QC though.

DSC_0405.jpg Not a KH clone at all, but I have a SBR 9mm AR15 with integrally silenced barrel that has been superbly reliable for almost 10 years now. Let me see if I can find a pic... Yes, two stamps for it.

Thanks for this...def helps give some perspective. I hear the PTR91s are perfection and hope the 9CT's are similar. The thing I like about PTR is supposedly any HK stuff is transferable with their stuff since its milled to HK spec.

Yes it is. When out in the desert shooting it and I ask someone if they want to shoot it, they always say yes. With sub-sonic ammo (any 147 grain factory load) it is very quiet. It is not light and this is where the HK or clones would win, but it is quite accurate!

If I ever hit the powerball I'm rebarreling my MP5 with the MP5SD barrel and getting a registered trigger pack for it.
