Need help: 1st DIY

Hi guys:

I'm a newbie for DIY. My 2017 Tacoma TRD OR is over 25 k miles and just finished the last free maintenance. I am going to do oil change myself and wonder if someone can recommend the tools needed for basic oil change and tire rotation. I've got a pair of ramps, a set of socket wrench. planning to buy oil filter wrench, oil drainage pan, oil filter and 7 qt full synthetic oil. Toyota recommends 10 k interval but the guy in Advance Auto Parts strongly suggests 5 k interval and I'm not sure if it's better or that's just a peace of mind. My local Toyota dealer says that they use a special synthetic oil specifically made for Toyota.

I looked on Craigslist for floor jack and jack stands and saw some cheap ones with 2 ton capacity. Just wonder if they are enough to support the truck for tire rotation? There are also some with 3-6 tons but they are much more expensive.

 

Consult your owners manual for weight of oil. I think I remember it being 0w-20. But for god sakes don't take my word for it. I agree with the 5k vs 10k oil change interval. 10k is too long for my tastes. I would use a synthetic over a conventional in this case as well. The socket set will need to be metric. Otherwise you are good to go. Nothing wrong with ramps. You don't need a jack/stands for oil changing. As for tire rotation, I would NOT go cheap on the jack nor the stands. You also really need a torque wrench for the lug nuts. I know folks don't use them but they SHOULD.

 

As mentioned, read your manual. You are going to get all kinds of recommendations on TW but it has been shown through 3rd party testing that what Toyota recommends is perfectly fine. That is all I will say on that subject, lol. Anyway, be safe, if you are not sure, spend more money for a better jackstand and floor jack. Don't cheap out there. Get yourself some brake cleaner as well to clean up with.

 

10K miles per oil change is fine if you plan to sell your truck before 100K miles. Most I will ever go is 5K, I want my truck to last. Also your truck weighs 2 tons, it's your life, spend the extra and get good stands and jack if your life is under it.

 

I'd recommend replacing the oil drain plug right away with a Fumoto valve..... Way cleaner...You will NOT regret it..!

I personally like the F103N, and puta short hose on it that goes directly into the oil jug. Careful...jug will not hold it all....jug switch required.

Also.... the oil filter housing will be VERY tight to remove....that's because it may be overtightened, but likely because of plastic/metal heating/cooling is different. Anyways...the seal for the filter is actually an "O" ring on the side of housing....not where the housing meets the truck.

10k interval for oil changes unless you fall into the sever duty category, odds are you dont.
0-20w oil, synthetic is your only option for this weight.
2 ton floor jack is sufficient, you're not picking up the entire truck with it.
2-3 ton jack stands. again, not holding the full weight of the vehicle and if you did need to do all for corners then with 4 jacks you would have 4-6 ton holding (ratings are for pairs)
harbor freight floor jacks are fine

NEVER WORK UNDER A VEHICLE ON A FLOOR JACK.

Thank you all for the replies. Very helpful! One more question: where do you buy the tools and parts like oil filter wrench, filter and oil? Dealership, auto parts store or Amazon?

 

I used Amazon.ca for everything except the 0-20 Mobil 1.....that's Wally World for me.

 

Do you have a recommendation of a good budget torque setup?

 

Honestly no. I'm using older Craftsman and Snap-on torque wrenches. I don't really know what's available today that is affordable yet decent quality.

 

What is the torque value on Tacoma alloy wheels?
