The 10-speed looks to be a huge part of the performance advantage. Much better gear spread, and it isn't as grossly over-geared in top gear. The Toyota 6AT is way over-geared in 6th, and the spread from 4th to 5th is too wide. If Toyota would adopt that transmission, I bet it would be much closer.

Isn’t that why we all bought Tacomas ... to have the quickest and fastest truck? o_O

Toyota’s hesitation of long term reliability concerns from their notoriously reliable heritage.

Comparing a turbo diesel in a county with no smog is like comparing apples to oranges.

If u want a turbo that bad get a Lexus

I don’t want a turbo, I just want you to be more accurate.

Tacoma dominates sales by a wide margin and that is not going to change overnight. Tacoma sales in recent years have been constrained by production capacity which Toyota is now addressing. Increased supply will affect resale to some extent for sure, it is not good news for us because the main thing holding up used prices is limited supply.

Nobody is saying the Taco is no longer competitive. The claimed fuel economy of the Ranger will not be an effective selling point, it is clear from the start that a blown motor will never get EPA mileage, and you can already see this show up in the video reviews. Any type of electronics and extra USB ports can easily be put into the next revision of the Taco.

To me the Ranger looks like a Ridgeline. Eww.

I am crushed that the Tacoma isn't the fastest truck made. Crushed.

For what it's worth Ford also put a passenger car motor in the new Ranger. That 2.3L Ecoboost motor is the same power-plant as is found in the Mustang. If I'm not mistaken, it comes with a different tune and possibly some other tweaks to give the motor more torque.

I've seen the ford wild trak and ranger running around for a few years. Best looking truck on the market, last year ford outsold the tacoma hilux.

I love my toyota hilux, but i would buy the ford wild trak over the toyoya.

The 2.2 turbo diesel is has close to the same power as my 3.0 turbo diesel with a f55 turbo, stand alone ecu ect.

Would i sell my truck for a wild trax? Nooooo but it would be nice to have 2 trucks. The second truck would be the ford 3.2 wild trak 4x4.

I hit play just long enough to realize we were discussing Doug Demuro. He's a cancer on automotive enthusiasm. Jalopnik was sorta cool, until they went full on libtard and also began hiring writers that can't even drive stick.

Of course the Ranger is faster and gets slightly better mileage, they had 3 years to evaluate the competition and edge them out. That's the way the industry works. See Camaro and mustang for examples.

The stock engine tune feels like crap. That's inarguable at this point. Why else would Toyota fix this with a new tune?

After receiving the new tune, I can't imagine going back to original stock tune.

I couldn't understand why anyone pays attention to him. I think his writing and presentation sucks. It's like he's trying to cater to men whose balls haven't dropped yet or the readers of Boy's Life.

I would assume the basic DNA of the 3rd Gen started to formulate in 2008/2009 when markets were in a tailspin and everyone was foreclosing and running screaming from their gas-guzzlers. The design criteria for the truck was probably “efficiency first”. Now the economy has recovered and we all want to chooch without care. I think that is basically it. Toyota gambled that fuel economy would be the primary selling feature, and here we all are looking to supercharge the truck and fit 37s.

Like anything else, turbo applications are fine... as long as everything is sized properly.
