Hunting for gears, I had two issues, one at high speed around 40-50 mph that was fixed by 62-18 and one at low speed when taking off from a full stop and reaching 4th gear at 1100 rpm, which is not fixed. I hate this transmission. Most of my driving is in the city and towns, non-highway driving.

I get a quicker response with ECT.

The only real and permanent fix for this seems to be the OV Tune. Page after page of testimonials state how this fixes the issue along with a few of the other quirks displayed by the 3rd gen transmission. Personally, apon start up, I immediately push the ECT and thrown it is S mode. When I'm in town driving under 40 I'm in S3. When on the highway I'm in S4 and then S5 when cruzing close to 70 mph. 6th gear is absolutely worthless. Any slight movement of the gas pedal and it shifts from 6th to 4th hard then to fifth and back to 6th. It will do this all day if you let it. Needless to say drive mode is also usless. The only good thing to come from the TSB 0062-18 update is the stumble has been eliminated and has not returned. It may just be time to spring for the OV Tune.

Agreed, my only worry is that someone specifically looks for it and finds it then renders my warranty void. They most likely are on this forum just like we are. That’s my only hesitation.

The Tsb made my truck drive infinitely better. The stock tune sucked. The new tune is how it should have come from the factory.

Anybody near Whittier Ca know a dealer that will do the update without giving me shit. I went to Penske Toyota in Downey twice because they had the least crappy yelp reviews around me. First time I went they said if i needed an update they would know and there was none. Just went again this morning brought the tsb paperwork and said I make frequent trips to big bear and the truck struggles, hesitates, and hunts for gears going up the mountain. They just called and said they can’t duplicate and therefore won’t do the update. Fuck Penske Toyota!

Shit! I would speak with the service manager or director of service and ask for contacts at the manufacturer. Go in with the purpose of escalation. If your truck has the issue and you can recreate it then they need to comply.

Thanks for all the helpful info. I got the updated tune from the dealership and am happy with the results. I was getting pretty use to the stock tune and could make the truck do what I wanted. The tune definitely helps the truck shift more the way that I like. Not as agressive as ect, but just about right for me. It was very helpful walking in with the tbs in hand. Thanks again TW

Just tried this too today. First oil change on Toyota's dime and had the TSB 62 printed out. Dealership said they could not replicate so they did not complete the TSB update. I was told that the tech did reset the "learning" methodology (my term, can't remember their wording) in the ECU so "drive it for a bit and see how it drives. We do have the stumble/hesitation documented in your file as a compliant."

I will add that I have been driving mostly in S4 and the truck is liveable -- hugely better than D. I'm going to drive in D like a madman to see if this reset actually will do anything.

I want to get the tsb done at my 10k mile service appointment in hopes of improving the drivability of my tacoma.

My question is will I need to remove my pedal commander before getting this done? Or should I just keep it out of sight and everything will be fine? Thanks in advance.

Without a doubt, remove it. Don't give the dealership any reason to say the PC is causing the issue.

That and OVTune’s website specifically states that the tune is only to be used for off road driving.

Yes, it’s a blanket CYA statement but it’s also crap. Especially since they know that everyone is using it on highways. And posting about in their thread.

I'm getting from 3 to 9 misfires on TSB on 17 mile commute daily. I'm getting OV just to help the engine out. I've driven almost 5K on TSB. It did help, but some days it just does not go.

Dangeroso is right. You’ll be fine with the OVtune. I have the 1.02 OV tune and took my truck in at my 15K service demanding the current TSB and took it in hand with me. They did the flash without any problems and no clue of my OV Tune. The truck doesn’t stumble at all for me now and shifts are way more predictable.

The 1.02 Tune was definitely better and now this current TSB improves on even that. The truck will drop only one gear when I use medium throttle now and 90% of the time while drop down two when I’m looking for power.

I moved recently and can’t find my OV Tune hardware and dongle so I have to keep looking but I’m eager to do the 1.05 for the updated TSB. I hear that is night and day better from what I’m currently running. I’m really happy with how the truck runs right now so I can’t wait to try the next flash when I find it.

Sounds like you should be fixed under warranty. This doesn’t sound good.

Agree with @Sheiweesh speak to the service manager. Tell the SM, I don’t care if your guys can’t reproduce the stumble in a 10, 30, or 60 minute test drive, I drive it all the time and the issue is there. Let them know that you know there is an update for the ECU and you are covered under warranty. I would even tell them to show you the printout saying there are no updates available after they hook up techstream to your truck.

If you don’t want to go that route, I had mine handled at Ventura Toyota, but that may be further than you want to drive. They showed me the printout with the update available, and then after with no updates available once the update had been installed. I did also speak with the sales guy I bought the truck from in advance. He sent a message to the service guy I was coming in and to do the update if it’s there. Maybe try that, so you ensure it before you even arrive.

Longo Toyota did mine a few weeks ago. I brought my truck in for it’s first service with a list of several minor issues and we Test drove together to verify each one. Th Service tech said it might not help so I replied not doing the TSB will definitely not help so ... they ended up doing it

I’m not sure how my post relates to yours. I will never buy a tune from OVTune. I refuse to support a business that shifts ALL liability to the consumer.

Sorry I was trying to respond to #2975 and reading through the chain again, I mistakenly quoted you as the wrong person. My apologies. I didn’t mean to tether you something you disagree with.
