We've got MTB threads and Dog threads which are two of my favorite things. Who else rides with a pup?

Question.... which skill for the pup, do you find most useful when bringing them on the trails with the bike? Cant just be recall. Or, maybe it is that simple?
Im hoping to TRY and crack that nut with out newest rescue.

    Thanks,

Immediate recall is a requirement. They also must know to yield to other bikes. Can be very dangerous if the dog just stands in the trail and another biker hits him/her. And obviously dont even try it with a dog that has even a hint of aggression toward people or other dogs.

I raced with my Spring Spaniel two years ago while she still had puppy energy. But nowadays we just have casual rides never longer than 5 or 6 miles

This is about the only part I would be concerned with.

Recall is something that is being worked on, as I live in the woods, and we have, everything from small rodents, to fishers, and bear....
    Demeanor is excellent.

Its that yield part that I have a concern with.

    Thanks,

Yeah it's tough to teach honestly. My dog is a rescue as well but just always seems to know exactly what he is supposed to do. To be honest, only a handful of the trails that we ride in the area (Charlotte) actually allow dogs off leash, so we are technically breaking the law. But because he is so well behaved and I know he will not cause any one any problems I risk the leash ticket. Two years and no issues, every one we have ever encountered on the trail loves him.

Where was this race that allowed pups?

That's why I'm asking, I'm in Charlotte so E. Tenn is just a hop, skip, and a jump.

It was a local race. But I'm not sure it's a permission sort of thing. In my experience if a dog is well-behaved nobody seems to mind. It's the bad apples that ruin it for everyone

Specifically this was the Roswell Quick Six Enduro in Roswell, Georgia.

I've always thought about planning a race that included dogs though, I think that would be cool

I feel the same way as @Bannerman ; fortunately I didn't have to do much with my dog for her to understand the basics. But once you do train your dog I can't stress enough the importance of reinforcing your training.

My girlfriend (fiance now) moved in this summer and all my dog's training has gone to shit. The dog prefers to lay on the couch and fetch rather than ride now

I should ad that as a rescue dog, I dont know his history. I suspect he was an abandoned hunting dog, he is extremely worried about being left now, stays with me really well. I also have pretty loud hubs on my bikes, I9, so once he hears those pawls clicking all he wants to do it chase the bike.

She is a Goldendoodle. Loves the water and here she just came out of the local Bay from Long Island Sound. Definitely needs a bath after swimming in salt water. lol
