Thank you. That video was exactly the sort of thing i was looking for. Perfect evidence the traction control uses the brakes to send power to the other wheel.

The SR and SR5 both have auto LSD as a standard feature. There is also no difference in the instrument cluster on the 18s and 19s as they now all come standard with cruise and the crash avoidance non sense.

The auto LSD feature kicks on when you turn traction control off. It works in 2wd and 4hi when you turn the standard traction control of...not 4lo but there is a mod for that. Its a good if not great system that has no equal to the casual 2 tracker imho...and I'm coming from a 04 rubicon. It uses the brakes to strategically send power to which ever wheels front or rear that have traction.

The reason I say this is great for the casual off roader and not the serious off roaders is simply because of brake life. For guys that wheel all the time...it does tend to kill your brake pads and shoes rather quickly. E lockers are fine...my last truck (F350) had one...but it wouldn't work at speeds over 25mph so using it on two tracks and in sand was not an option. Id have much rather had Toyotas system...not that i wheeled a 8k lbs super duty

As far as capability of the SR5 vs the off road...tires is about it imho. No place id take one truck vs the other if they had the same tires.

The TRD or is the best looking of the tacos imho though and that's the biggest advantage. I love the fender flares and wheels. Its why I got a SR SX. I wanted the 2.7 and couldn't get it otherwise. This way I got sweet wheels, flares, the engine I wanted...everything else I've added via mods. Bigger tires, leveling kit, grill etc

I should add...i like all the 3rd gen tacomas. There is a guy at my shooting club that has a basic sr with the black bumper and no rear seats etc. He leveled the truck and put bigger tires on it. Looks sweet and he's into it for like 26k. Its a basic but burly look...reminds me of my previous 95 RIP

I respectfully disagree. There is evidence that the gen 3 SR/SR5 in 4 lo has 'something' that is active right from the factory. No yellow wire mod needed. Look at the video posted. Look at the last few pages in the sticky in this sub forum on what/how the different modes work.

It's my understanding ( misunderstanding?) That the only difference between Auto LSD and Trac is that Trac has engine regulation where as LSD does not. So if in 4 lo on gen 3 SR/SR5's you have "Trac" with no engine regulation, you have in effect Auto LSD.

The auto LSD is a function of the TRAC system its not separate. So depending what mode your in changes how TRAC operates.

My SR has gotten me around just fine on some pretty decent trails here in Colorado. I’ve had several people comment on it when they’ve seen me on some trails. But I will say tires, airing down and driver are all factors when it comes down to how well a vehicle performs out on a trail.

Yes, you're right. I was being lazy using Auto LSD as a genetic way of saying brake simulated LSD. I can see how that would cause confusion.

In a simple nutshell... ALL Tacoma models have the same traction controls, EXCEPT the OFF ROAD TRD which has MORE.

An SR5, Base, SPORT TRD, all have the same TRAC, AUTO LSD, & TRAC OFF (after 2011). Only the OFF ROAD TRD has a locking differential and since 2009, A-TRAC and since 2016 MTS/CRAWL on the automatics.

Having 4WD is the big step up for all Tacomas. The locker and A-TRAC just make you nearly unstoppable and more secure if you are traveling alone.

Hey, It's a Toyota! As long as it has has a 4low, it's more than capable.

Today I drove in about 1-2" of snow in 2 wheel drive, then threw on 4hi just to prevent sliding. That's all I needed today. No rear locker, no Crawl Control.
