I just bought my 2019 SRDC, 4x2, auto trans last Saturday. It is an awesome truck and runs perfectly. However, I am not sure if I am just not familiar with the way it accelerates and shifts or what. I have noticed while in normal (non-ECT mode), when it shifts into what feels like 4th gear it has a slight "lugging/shuttering" feeling. When I slightly accelerate it immediately goes away.

If this all in my mind or is this something that is fairly common on the 4 bangers?

    Thanks guys.

My 2018 had some weird shifting and hesitation, till it got a few miles on it. It's not unusual with the auto, I've seem it in other post.

Common issue thanks to Federal CAFE standards. Most manufactures design automatic transmissions to shift to the highest gear and lock the torque converter as soon as possible. This can cause lugging/stuttering at low engine RPM.

Get into the gas pedal a little deeper
. These transmissions are designed with adaptive learning and as mentioned above do go to the higher gears quickly

Thanks guys. So this is nothing I should be concerned about or talk to the dealer about? Right now it is a little annoying is all. Otherwise, I have no issue with the shifting/acceleration.

Wow, that is crazy. In all my years of working on cars I have never heard of anything like this before. Just wish these Einsteins would leave some things on these vehicles simple.

adaptive learning was released in the late 80,s .
If you have ever been in a dodge Caravan or any chrysler vehicle , they all had adaptive learning back then .

Correct, I'm familiar with the "adaptive learning" part, I just have never in life seen a brand new truck do that this one is doing, LOL. My experience has been with old worn out transmissions lugging and shuttering. I am just not able to understand the mentality behind a design that would cause a condition like this.

So, I met with the Master Tech at my dealer yesterday (1/14/19). He rode along while I drove. I explained before we pulled out of the parking lot what the issue is that I am complaining about. We left the dealer, we didn’t get 100 yards down the road and the tech he could feel the shudder/hesitation. I continued one for another mile or so each time asking him if he felt it, he replied that yes, he did. While driving and while the shuddering was evident, I side shifted the shifter to “S” mode and each time it showed 4th gear being the gear it’s in when the shudder occurs predominately. He acknowledged this as well. While en-route back to the dealer, he explained to me that my truck did not have any TSB’s, flashes, or recalls. He said that in previous year models Tacoma’s did have this common issue but Toyota had fixed the problem for 2019. He did however acknowledge that something was not quite right in what he was experiencing with the truck. He also stated that this new truck should not be having any mechanical transmission issues and he believes, in short, that it could possibly be something wrong with the computer software and how it controls the transmissions. He said his next step is to keep the truck, start gathering and get screen shots of that data while the truck is shuddering. He said once he has collected this data he will send it to Toyota and have a tech analyze that data and see what their thoughts are and if there is a plan for resolving this issue.

Additionally, he said he was going to get another truck off the lot that is exactly like mine and compare the test drives to see how the other trucks shifts and behaves (can't say that happened). He said if that truck also does the same thing, it would be assumed that it is just the characteristics of the truck and more than likely nothing could be done. I understand his position in issues like these from a “company” standpoint but regardless of what another truck does, I’m unhappy with how this truck is operating and it is not meeting my expectation as a consumer/customer. Again, I have been working on cars since before I could even drive and when a vehicle surges, shudders, hesitates or jerks there IS an issue. I have been told by a couple people at the dealer that “well, the government/EPA requires this and that in the design and manufacture of these vehicles”. I’m ok with that but my rhetorical question is; how does my wife’s NEW Chevy Equinox 4 cylinder not shudder, hesitate, jerk or surge? It too had to meet the same EPA standards as this Tacoma yet it runs/shifts & drives perfectly. So, with that, I have debunked blaming the EPA as much as I would like to, LOL. So I left the truck with them and took a loaner car home.

As of today (1/15/19), the dealer called me and said I can come pick up my truck. They sent all the data to Toyota and that Toyota has stated the truck is operating as it should and that "my issue" is nothing more than a characteristic of the truck. So, Toyota designed this truck to shudder???? That, my friends is TOTAL and COMPLETE BS!!!

Sadly, it's time to go to plan B. I hope I can peacefully work our something with the dealer but we'll see. I REFUSE to pay for a brand new vehicle that shudders/jerks, and surges under any circumstance or excuses! I honestly do not care what the dealer, "a redesign" excuse, Toyota, the EPA or anyone has to say, this truck is not preforming correctly and either it is going to get fixed or replaced. There is not a human alive who can try to or convince me that Toyota intentionally designed this truck to shudder, jerk, surge, hesitate, or whatever the technical term is for it. If that's was the case, as part of the sales pitch, the dealer needs to inform potential customers that the vehicle they are about to buy shudders, jerks, hesitate and surges so they will know that up front in case the customer doesn't notice it on their own. And NO! a test drive does not always reveal "not so obvious" issues like this. It was only after 3-4 days of driving it when it I really started feeling it. When I first drove it everything felt new and different so it was not noticeable (if it was even doing it then) to me even as hyper aware as I am to things like this. Besides who in the h_ll expects a new truck with 15 miles on it to have an issue like this. Because of this ONE issue, this truck has not and is not meeting my expectations as a customer and the sad part is, a rep on behalf of the Toyota dealer admitted it is not performing correctly and yet Toyota Corp. still denies it. Additionally the service adviser stated over the phone that "at some point in time, Toyota may release a TSB that will fix the issue". So, let me get all this straight; I have the Dealers Master Tech telling me it is shuddering, the Dealers Service Adviser inadvertently admitted to me that one day Toyota will probably release a TSB to fix it. LMAO, that's all quite interesting. Of course I will get all this in writing from the dealer when I pick up the truck.

Anyone else having this issue with their 2019?????

Yes, I will be getting it all in writing for sure. Yes, I am starting the process by sending the Dealership GM a polite but extensive email about this first. Then I will go step by step from there. No, I haven't talked to a shop yet although that is an excellent idea.

This is such a shame, I LOVE this truck.

It is a long story so I'll spare you all the details and give you the short version.

The President of my dealership called me back yesterday. They have contacted Toyota and they are sending a field rep down and will be here Thursday. They claim I am the first to complain about this issue on a 19 model. The field rep will spend the day doing an inspection on the truck. If he cannot determine an immediate fix for the problem or offer an alternate solution, the dealer has told me they will Lemon Law it and put me into another truck.

So, I am please with the plan so far. I hope to have a definitive answer by Friday (1/25/19). As soon as this is concluded, I will post up what the final outcome was.

I joined specifically for this conversation. My 2019 now has 500 miles on it. From the very first drive, I have a very low tone struggle/vibration at the bottom of gears 4, 5, 6. As mentioned above, it is very eager to get into the next higher gear, and when it does, with about 1200 rpm, noticeable, annoying vibration. True, if I ascend from 0 to 60, it's not too noticeable. But if I choose to cruise at say 43, auto 6th gear, very annoying vibration and a low tone that makes me think a car with a boom base is somewhere near.
Also, very odd, truck wants to accelerate on the way into the garage. Very slight, short term increase in rpm and acceleration while I creep into the garage. My foot is on the brake so no ill affects, but what is this all about. Very strange... I cannot duplicate this on the open road. It's like a horse wanting to get in out of the cold and get fed.

I have more history to share regarding my trip to the dealer and my ride with the Service Manager. But bottom line, he drove another truck like mine and feels my truck is OK. "But let it learn for a few months and let us know how you're doing on your first 5000 mile service."

When I read this conversation, I was somewhat relieved, but I am not so certain we will get any resolution.
