I'd use vehicle specific clay. It isn't expensive. Plenty of YouTube videos on proper technique. It's incredibly simple.

Costs more than clay upfront, but lasts longer than multiple claybars.

If you have ever clayed, when you try this you'll never go back.

Seems to be plenty of info by just doing a quick Google search.
Some plumers putty has oils in them.
At the price of clay bars why are we discussing a cheaper alternative?

Then look up how much it'd cost to spray truck it's just not worth the cost difference.

Why??? You can get a clay bar and lube for under $20 at a big box store.

I guess the next time I detail a plumber's truck, I'll look some of that (invaluable) information up. In the mean time, I think I'm going to stick with products designed to do a specific job and not risk messing up an expensive paint job. Then again, I heard (on the internet) that KY Jelly works great as a tire dressing ...

No. No you can't use plumbers putty.

If you have ever used plummers putty that is evident.

Clay bars are cheap, so there is no such thing as a cheap alternative.

Not sure why I got tagged in that comment I made for o.p to do his own research.
    (Not you)
Maybe read slower and you will see I am saying.

"why are we discussing this topic when clay is already so cheap and paint job is so expensive"
Again not sure why I was tagged in your post.
