The stock plastic cover will fatigue over time as it cycles thru cold, hot, cold, hot, etc. It may, eventually, crack. The covers will tighten during use due to the thermal cycling. Removal can add additional stress. You might be okay with the stock cover long term but, for $20, its cheap insurance.

I put mine back on without the clips and they stayed put after being rear ended.

 

Picked up a set of Hella 700FF driving lamps and 130w bulbs to mount behind the grill.

Being the butterfingered stupid mutherfucker that I am... I dropped one of the lamps and shattered it all over the garage floor.
So... the project came to a screeching halt.
I'm sure the neighbors several doors down heard the profanity laced tirade coming from my garage.
Amazon will have another lamp here Wednesday.
