TAR!!! Get it off!!!

Last time I washed my truck I was all ready to wax, but noticed around the wheel wells there were little specks of what I think is tar. I suspect it's from driving on roads that have recently had potholes filled. I figured I should remove this before waxing, but it's hard to take off as it streaks when I wipe it. Does anybody have any tips on a quick way to get it off without damaging the paint? Are there specialty products for removing this?

There is this stuff from a company called First Ayd. They make a super citrus tar grease and adhesive remover that works really well. Had a white maxima and rolled down a freshly tared road. It sat for a week till i got some in and it came off with no problems. Just a power washer and a little elbow grease and looked like new after i waxed it. I actually sell it here at my shop, if you cant find it

I've heard mayo works real well too....Yes..the condiment. The oils soften the tar to make it easier to scrub off. I used it for bugs...

 

WD-40 always works for me. Smells good too.

 

The turtle wax bug and tar remover is the best stuff Ive ever used.

 

You can literally watch the tar melt off of your truck.

 

+1 for Stoner's Tarminator. You can also use a clay bar after Tarminator to make sure all the tar is gone.

On my work truck i'll just spray some diesel on the tar and it pretty much wipes right off. I'm sure its not the best thing for the paint, but it hasn't seemed to have any noticeable effects so far, and I've been using this method for quite some time. If you have some, i'd use the Sea-foam bug and tar remover first.

 

Wanted to follow up on the TARMINATOR $5 spray can.

First note this, I got some on my truck, it was fresh, like 2 weeks old. My daughters car, had some on there since I bought it 6 months ago, and dont know how long its been on there.

Tarminator got it off my truck really easy, not like directions said "spray on wet surface and spray water to get off." I tried that, still there so I put some on a rag, wiped it off with ease. Part of tar was on paint and fender flares.

Now my daughters car has got alot more tar, but I sprayed, let it sit for 2 min (directions say 1 min) and then rinsed. No change. Put some on a rag, scrubbed and again, nothing. Tried 2 more times - nothing. Going to have to try something else.

 

WD-40 will work without fail. Why waste money on other stuff. Everyone has some in their garage.

 

I scratch it off w/my thumbnail, then wipe it down w/distilled water.
