Its been an amazing trip. So nice to disperse camp anywhere and the camping part is easy!1754D8CC-77D7-40F7-A29A-D1DD3A11AC05.jpgEC62BF79-308A-4065-9404-8AF968292B16.jpg

Ha! Was just down the coast from you last night. Popped over the Sierras for a quick Point Reyes trip. Spent the night at Dillion Beach. Unfortunately not disperse camping. Not much public land for dispense camping down there. Will have to travel north next time and hunt it down.

Yeah it can be tough to find sometimes. I finally upgraded my Gaia to premium and the USFS 2016 and MVUM have been good. Plus I use iOverlander to find good spots. I used to use freecampsites.net but the app for iOverlander will give you the info even offline. Not always the map though, but then I use my Gaia on my iPad.

i see the overall height of your box is 16". Does that leave any room above the box and lowest portion of the DBack cover or is it pretty maxed out.

Mine is a little over 17” which is slighty higher than the OPs. Mine has about an inch below the top of the bed.

I’ve got enough room for my flat items like my fire pit grill, random flat bags and such.

thank you, that was gonna be my follow up question.

thank you. Why did you go with ACX as opposed to MDO? MDO seems to be lighter weight and more weather resistant.

also, am i right in reading your blue prints that the slides account for 3/4" on either side?

I'm finally getting around to building mine based off of your design. I am changing the front door panel though. I intend to do one front panel that swings open 270*. It will stay close with a heavy duty toggle clamp on the other side. This is what I've modeled so far.

I do want to see if I can come up with a different way of pulling out the large drawer. The $200 price tag on those 56" drawer slides just kills me.

i agree...200 for sliders basically double the price.

My build has two sets. Yikes. $450 in sliders.

To be fair though, you could definitely find other ways to have the drawer come out; but they're not going to be nearly as sturdy, efficient, or clean.

It's up to you to decide what you need the drawer to do. If you're going to use a different material or only store super light cargo in your drawer, maybe you don't need something so substantial.

Well in order for you to be able to cantilever a drawer out that far, you would need something heavy duty like that regardless. The weight of the drawer itself is probably around 30lbs or so. I found this video where a guy used square tubing and ball bearings. It's definitely a cheaper alternative.

Yes, I'm aware :). That's why I paid the money to use the heavy duty slides.

MDO could have been an option, but in talking with the lumbar yard they said 1/2” ACX would be stronger for anchoring screws, such as the HD sliders. I put PU and water hasn’t affected it. But that was how I did it and it’s been strong so far!

Basically you truly get what you pay for. I didn’t like the cost either but with heavy drawers going in and out often, which is the backbone of this design, I wanted it to work every time and be durable. I have been hundreds of miles off roading now, up steep waterfalls shifting weight side to side, 50mph down dirt roads, and it’s doing great still. I looked at bearings as well but when the drawer fully extends (which is not as far as full extension) you will get some droop. So for me I got the sliders and haven’t looked back. Smooth lock in and out and now months later and hundreds of dirt miles I wouldn’t change it.

I like this design. One thing to consider though is will you have gear next to the drawer that you would have to move everytime you pull out the drawer?

My back is loaded and I’ve learned I hate shuffling crap around so I’m building a DIY bedslide for the other side.
